It plays as a  2.5D side-scroller, with action punctuated through highly stylish combos from Sargon’s sword skills. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Ichiban Kasuga is back! And this time, he is joined by long-time series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu. The direct sequel to 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, explores the Isezaki Ijincho district of Yokohama, as well as travels overseas in a series-first — venturing into Honolulu City in Hawaii for Kasuga to search and reunite with his mother.

The turn-based combat system makes a return, with Kiryu able to uniquely switch between multiple fighting styles and also temporarily perform real-time brawler combat, just like the previous games in the series. The franchise’s iconic minigames are also back, and new ones will be introduced, like Crazy Delivery, a food delivery game inspired by Crazy Taxi, and the Pokemon parody Sujimon Battle.

Tekken 8

With Street Fighter 6 taking up the spotlight for fighting games in 2023, 2024 could be Tekken’s time to shine. Takken 8 is the series’ next main instalment and continues the tragic saga of the Mishima and Kazama bloodlines, with a final confrontation between father and son Kazuya Mishima and Jin Kazama.

The game introduces a new battle system called Heat. Engaging in the Heat State enhances characters’ abilities, providing not only chip damage and additional move-sets but also changing the properties of some characters’ moves, such as changing it into a heavy guard break. The Tekken fighting environments are now more cinematic as well, with a focus on stage destruction.

Players will also get to try out 32 playable characters for the base roster; four of them being new additions to the series. Of the four, there’s Reina — a fashionable teenager with an acrobatic fighting style — and Victor Chevalier, a legendary French war veteran and super spy who focuses on close-quarters combat.

Persona 3 Reload

Persona 5 is a global favourite today, but it wouldn’t have been possible to attain its current status had it not been for Persona 3, which introduced many of the current features we now know and love. As a game that came out in 2006, though, it isn’t easy to play through if you are used to modern gameplay systems, until now.

Persona 3 Reload is a full-fledged remake of the original game, featuring new visuals and quality-of-life improvements. Locations like Gekkoukan High School and Tartarus have been remodelled from the ground up, and the remake now features a stylish UI makeover akin to that of Persona 5. The series’ Social Link system makes a return but now includes side-story arcs that will deepen the protagonist’s relationship with characters. Iwatodai Dorm has also been expanded upon with multiple activities, such as cooking food and tending to plants, which will raise social stats and award useful battle items.

The iconic music from the game has also been rearranged. It features new tracks from returning rap artist Lotus Juice and Azumi Takahashi, who takes over as lead vocalist for the title.

Release date: 2 February 2024
Platforms:

  • PlayStation 4
  • PlayStation 5
  • PC
  • Xbox One

Helldivers 2

Who remembers the punishing 2015 game Helldivers? If you do, look no further than the upcoming sequel, Helldivers 2, which again asks you to deliver ‘Managed Democracy’ for Super Earth against hostile enemies.

While the first game was a top-down shooter, Helldivers 2 has been developed as a third-person cooperative team shooter instead. But the game’s staple objective-based missions remain, with players needing to be tactful about their loadouts and approaches for each mission. Similarly, friendly fire is also always on, adding a need for communication between teammates to ensure you get out alive.

Release date: 8 February 2024
Platforms:

  • PlayStation 5
  • PC

Masochists of difficulty can pre-order the game via Steam or the PlayStation Store.

Skull and Bones

Local developer Ubisoft Singapore is making their first game as lead studio, hedging on its expertise on the naval battles from the Assassin’s Creed series. Skull and Bones is an open-world pirate game, where players get to embody a pirate during the late 17th century — the peak of the Golden Age of Piracy.

At the start, you get to choose your pirate captain and then commandeer your own pirate ship and crew. Multiple ships can be added and customised to make your dream fleet a reality. Naval combat involves using the wind system to tactically position your ship as you hunt merchant ships and raise your reputation.

Though you can play solo, players are encouraged to team up with others online to take down convoys at the seas of the Indian Ocean. Of course, as a pirate, betrayal is an irresistible vice, and you can opt to steal rewards instead of sharing them. In addition to competitive five-versus-five matches, there is also a mode called Loot Hunt, where two groups of players engage in a treasure-hunting challenge to further their riches.

The sequel sees him fighting the forces of Hive Fleet Leviathan, an enemy group that has invaded the Imperial worlds of Avarax and Kadaku.

The game is played from a third-person perspective, where players will face the Tyranid hordes with a mixture of melee and ranged gameplay. The arsenal of devastating guns is used to thin out groups of enemies, but hack-and-slash combat is needed to tackle more powerful enemies like the Tyranid warrior.
