Sacred Jewel Drops 5 December: Ahn Bo-hyun Falls for a Princess in 1258 Goryeo

Prime Video says Sacred Jewel, a 14-episode Korean historical drama starring Ahn Bo-hyun, Lee Sung-min and Claudia Kim, premieres on Saturday, 5 December 2026. It launches in Singapore and more than 240 countries and territories on the same day.

That simultaneous launch matters more than it sounds. The series premieres on 5 December in Singapore and more than 240 countries and territories. The hook is classic sageuk (the Korean term for a historical drama): a forbidden romance, a legendary jewel and a kingdom in its final, frantic stretch.

Goryeo in 1258, Out of Options

According to Prime Video’s announcement, the story opens in 1258 during the Goryeo Dynasty, after nearly three decades of relentless warfare against the Mongols. The kingdom is on the brink of collapse, and the only plan left on the table is a daring expedition that sounds more like a prayer than a strategy.

An elite convoy sets out to recover a sacred jewel believed to possess miraculous powers capable of protecting Goryeo. The route takes them through enemy territory and beyond the mountains toward the eastern sea, which gives the drama the shape of a road trip through a war zone rather than a palace soap opera.

It’s worth knowing which parts are history and which are the story. The decades of Mongol invasions are the real backdrop, while Prime Video introduces Baek Gyul, Choi Gu and Princess Wang Hee as characters, and the jewel’s powers are only ever believed. Go in expecting a period adventure built on a true crisis, and the mix of swordfights and longing will land the way it’s meant to.

A Bodyguard Who Loved Upwards

Ahn Bo-hyun plays Baek Gyul, the only son of the Vice Minister of War and a member of the Gyeonryonggun, the emperor’s elite bodyguard. Prime Video describes him as fiercely determined and intelligent, with a stubborn streak matched only by his convictions, which is K-drama code for a hero who will absolutely refuse to retreat.

His problem is the princess. When his forbidden love for Princess Wang Hee provokes the emperor’s wrath, Baek Gyul is appointed Commander of the special convoy and sent off with the Elite Military Task Force. That’s the cleverest beat in the setup: the suicide mission is, in effect, the emperor’s reply to a love affair he never approved.

Fans will know Ahn from Spring Fever, Flex X Cop and My Name, the credits Prime Video lists for him. Seeing him in period dress, carrying a mission and a heartbreak at the same time, is the reason many viewers will press play in the first place.

Claudia Kim, known for Gyeongseong Creature, The Atypical Family and Chimera, plays Princess Wang Hee, the emperor’s youngest daughter. Her icy demeanour hides a life scarred by a political marriage and devastating personal loss, and she has long chosen emotional distance over vulnerability until Baek Gyul starts breaking through those walls.

Wang Hee is the character to watch. The announcement says she races to the convoy’s aid, which turns her from the reason Baek Gyul was sent on the mission into someone actively chasing the danger, and that’s far more interesting than a princess waiting at a window!

Lee Sung-min Takes the Captain’s Seat

Lee Sung-min (Teach You a Lesson, Reborn Rich, No Other Choice) plays Choi Gu, a legendary warrior whose reputation was forged across hundreds of battles. Prime Video says young soldiers once dreamed of serving under him because they believed it gave them their best chance of survival.

Now he’s appointed Captain of Baek Gyul’s convoy, while the younger man holds the title of Commander. That pecking order alone promises friction, and Choi Gu arrives with his own weight, as he grapples with the fading glory of his past and a growing awareness of his mortality.

A seasoned soldier wondering whether he has one fight left in him is the kind of role that quietly steals a series. Paired with a reckless young lover, it gives Sacred Jewel a second emotional engine beyond the romance.

The Reborn Rich Reunion

Behind the camera is director Jung Dae-yoon, whose credits include Reborn Rich and She Was Pretty. Lee Sung-min also lists Reborn Rich, so fans of that hit get a director and lead actor working together again. Writer Jung Hyun-min brings The Nokdu Flower and Jeong DoJeon to the table.

The series is produced by SLL and Celltrion Entertainment. Ha Yoon-kyoung (Undercover Miss Hong, The Apartment Job, See You in My 19th Life) and Yoon Kyun-sang (The Rebel, House of Lies, Six Flying Dragons) round out the ensemble, although Prime Video hasn’t yet said who they play.

Plan the 5 December Watch Party

Fourteen episodes is a manageable commitment, roughly a few weekends of viewing if you pace yourself, and much less if you don’t. Prime Video says members can download episodes to mobile devices and tablets in the Prime Video app and watch offline at no additional cost, which helps if your binge happens on the MRT.
