Sing Your 2026 Out on Gateway Theatre’s Rooftop with MICappella

Singapore vocal band MICappella is ending its year with Sing On 2026: It’s A Wrap!, a one-hour rooftop singalong at the Gateway Theatre Sky Garden on 11 and 12 December 2026.

The pitch is straightforward. At this show the audience is part of the music, singing Mandopop songs most of the room probably learned years ago, instead of sitting quietly and filming the stage. If your friends treat a karaoke room like a stadium, this one is aimed squarely at them.

What Sing On Means

It’s A Wrap! is the year-end edition of 《Sing On 唱在一起》, the community singalong series MICappella has run at Gateway Theatre this year. The Chinese title translates roughly to “sing together”, and the format matches the name.

That matters more than it sounds. Plenty of people love singing but would never pick up a karaoke mic in front of strangers, and a room where everyone sings the same line at once is far less intimidating. MICappella’s band manager, Diana Tan, says the series began with “a simple goal: to make a cappella and Mandopop more accessible to music lovers who simply love to sing!”

“One of the most magical moments at every session is hearing all the voices and harmonies come together,” she adds. “It never fails to give us goosebumps!” She describes It’s A Wrap! as “a celebration of all the songs and memories we’ve shared this year”, and says the band can’t wait to sing more with everyone in 2027.

The Songs Worth Warming Up For

The repertoire includes favourites such as:

  • First Day《第一天》
  • A Little Happiness of Those Years《那些年的小幸运》, a MICappella mashup of《那些年》and《小幸运》
  • Moonlight in the City《城里的月光》, chosen for its warmth
  • Don’ts Don’ts《伤心的人别听慢歌》, chosen for its “infectious energy”

MICappella originals and some of the band’s favourite covers will round out the hour.

The mashup is the track to watch. It joins two songs that each carry a lot of nostalgia. Hearing a full rooftop take on the arrangement is the main reason to book. Don’ts Don’ts should be the loudest moment of the night, because a fast, cathartic chorus is far easier for a crowd to belt than a ballad.

Who’s Leading the Singing

MICappella formed in 2009 and has six members: Tay Kexin, Calin Wong, Juni Goh, Eugene Yip, Peter Huang and Lai Jee Yon. The band says it creates its whole sound with voices, using harmonies and vocal percussion instead of instruments. In a singalong, that means the band builds the backing track live while you supply the chorus.

The band biographies list plenty of experience. Peter Huang, the founder and vocal percussionist, studied at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. Soprano Tay Kexin toured as a backing vocalist on David Tao’s world tour from December 2013. Baritone Eugene Yip has worked in the studio with acts such as Gentle Bones, and Lai Jee Yon is the band’s newest member, singing bass.

Tenor Juni Goh is a bilingual emcee, which helps when the job is coaxing a rooftop of strangers into harmony. According to MICappella’s own materials, the group has performed at two National Day Parades (2018 and 2022) and sang Majulah Singapura at the 2019 Formula One Grand Prix flag-off ceremony. The band also says its 2019 EP, Love MICappella, won Outstanding Asian Album and Best Original Song by a Professional Group.

Why Mandopop Fills a Room Here

Spotify figures from 2018 showed that local users had streamed more than 310 million hours of Mandopop since the platform launched here in 2013, with Jay Chou as their most-streamed global artist. Silence Wang’s Singapore debut in March 2026 also sold out three shows at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Those are stadium-sized numbers, but It’s A Wrap! works at a much smaller scale. For a singalong that’s a plus, since each voice in a crowd of 120 can be heard, and a small capacity means seats will go quickly.

Picking Your Night

There are two shows, each 60 minutes long. Friday, 11 December at 8pm is the pick for an after-work plan, because you get an evening sky over the rooftop and still have time for supper afterwards. Saturday, 12 December at 5pm suits groups who want to sing first and eat dinner after, and it’s the easier option if you’re bringing family along.

Tickets are eligible for SG Culture Pass. If you’re still filling your December calendar, the Christmas in Singapore 2026 guide lists plenty of festive light-ups that pair well with an evening at Gateway Theatre.
