Six Decades of Japanese Dining

Matsuya Foods Holdings traces its beginnings to a Chinese restaurant in Tokyo in 1966. Its first restaurant specialising in gyumeshi and grilled-meat set meals opened in 1968. The group marks its 60th anniversary this year. The brand is best known for its Gyumeshi (beef rice bowls), alongside Japanese curries and set meals.

The brand’s philosophy is “To be everyone’s dining table”, and it describes the goal as affordable, speedy, authentic Japanese food.

One naming quirk to know before you order: Matsuya calls its signature dish gyumeshi rather than gyudon. It is beef served over rice in a bowl.

What’s on the Draft Menu

Matsuya says the Singapore menu will closely follow its Japanese core: gyumeshi, other beef bowls, Japanese curry and grilled-meat set meals. According to the brand, key ingredients will be imported directly from Matsuya in Japan or selected to match the Japanese versions.

  • Gyumeshi beef bowls
  • Teishoku (Japanese set meals)
  • Japanese curry
  • a Kids’ Set

The draft menu also lists unagi (eel) bowls.

The Gyu Negitama is gyumeshi topped with green onion and a soft-boiled egg.

The press kit also shows a Gyu Cheese bowl topped with melted, shredded cheese.

Toppings That Go Further

  • Mayo kimchi gyumeshi (English name to be confirmed).
  • Don Kimukaru.

There’s also rice topped with stir-fried beef in ginger soy sauce, garnished with sesame and sliced onion.

The Price Question

Singapore prices have not been confirmed: the draft menu from the sender is labelled “to be finalized”. When you check the menu on the day, see whether prices are nett or have GST (Goods and Services Tax) added on top.

How Opening Day Works

Matsuya says you’ll order at self-order kiosks, the same setup as its newer Japanese branches. You pick, pay and wait for your bowl without needing to flag anyone down.

Matsuya has said 24-hour opening could come later, along with Singapore-only menu items and more outlets around the island. Treat those as plans rather than promises for now.

Before You Go

  • Check the fine print. Look for whether menu prices are nett or have GST added.
  • Bringing kids? Look for the Kids’ Set.
