The Premise in One Breath

The setup will sound familiar if you’ve seen Coffee Prince (2007) or The King’s Affection (2021), where a woman passes as a man and the romance gets complicated. This version adds a murder case and a very rich suspect. (Here’s our September preview of the premise.) Now the cast has explained how they built it, and some of those details make the show more interesting than its logline.

Who’s Who in This Cover Story

The detective is Kang Jae-hee, a former special forces officer turned police detective, played by Seorina (also credited as Seol In-ah). Rom-com fans will know her from Mr. Queen and Business Proposal.

Jae-hee disguises herself as a man to join the security team of Yoon Yi-jun, played by Yim Si-wan. If his face rings a bell, he was in Squid Game, Run On and Strangers from Hell. Yi-jun is a third-generation chaebol heir, meaning he comes from a powerful family-run business empire, and he’s suspected of murder.

The series is adapted from the web novel Why Don’t You Know It’s a Girl?, which Prime Video says has passed 8.15 million views on Kakao Webtoon. Fans of the original story already know the shape of it, but everyone else gets to guess along with Jae-hee.

A Wardrobe That Hides Loneliness

Yim described Yi-jun as resembling “a feisty cat”, and said he wanted to play a different kind of heir. “He was born into a life where everything he had to do was already decided for him, leaving little room for what he actually wanted,” he explained at the Seoul press conference.

His best insight was about the clothes. “The lonelier someone is, the more extravagantly they tend to dress,” Yim said, adding that he wanted Yi-jun’s glamour to make “the emptiness inside him stand out even more.” According to Prime Video, he wore more outfits for this series than for any of his previous projects.

That’s a smart reading of a trope that usually treats designer suits as set dressing. It gives viewers a reason to notice the costumes instead of scrolling past them, and a hint about where his character is headed.

Seorina’s Haircut Is the Point

Plenty of disguise dramas lean on a wig and a baggy jacket. Seorina cut her hair short for the role, and she admits it took some adjusting. “At first, I felt unfamiliar with my own appearance after cutting my hair,” she said. “But as I immersed myself in Jae-hee, I stopped seeing the short hair simply as part of a disguise. Instead, I saw it as a reflection of someone completely devoted to her work.”

She also refused to build the role purely out of masculine mannerisms. “I thought about how she should speak and walk, but I didn’t want to limit myself to those details. I wanted to focus on who Kang Jae-hee truly is.”

That approach is the strongest reason to give the show a shot. A disguise plot lives or dies on whether the person inside the costume feels like a whole character, and Seorina’s answer suggests the writers and cast took that seriously. Yim was convinced from the start: “Just seeing her walk in with her short hair, I already felt like Kang Jae-hee was approaching me.”

The Bodyguard Who Does the Saving

Here’s the twist worth tuning in for. Seorina teased that Jae-hee often takes the lead in protecting Yi-jun, which flips the usual K-drama setup where the rich hero swoops in to rescue everyone. Yi-jun has no idea his bodyguard is a woman, so his growing attraction comes with plenty of confusion and comedy.

Seorina summed up their arc as “from suspicion to trust”. She said much of the fun is working out whether the pair are drawing closer because of real feelings or because Jae-hee is chasing the truth. Yim went for one word, “purity”, then explained why the pairing is so tense: “A chaebol heir suspected of murder and a detective investigating him: what could be a more nerve-racking combination?”

Director Park Dhan-hee said he “spent a lot of time thinking about how to bring together romance, comedy and action”, and credited the cast’s chemistry to numerous script readings over three months. Three months of table reads is a solid sign the banter was rehearsed rather than left to luck!

The Grown-Up Couple Worth Watching

The second romance might end up being the sleeper hit. Kim Junghyun plays Kim Si-hyun, a lawyer and Yi-jun’s close friend, while Yeonwoo plays Lee Hye-jung, the chairman’s secretary at Taekang Group. Park called their story “a passionate, mature romance”.

Kim drew the contrast neatly: Yi-jun and Jae-hee have “a cute, youthful dynamic through their playful bickering”, while his couple portrays “a more realistic relationship that viewers might recognize from everyday life.” Yeonwoo added that “neither is easily swayed”, which sounds like the slow-burn push-and-pull that keeps a side plot from feeling like filler.

  • ❌ Skip it if you want a pure thriller. Prime Video describes it as a mix of romance, comedy, action and mystery, and the cast leaned harder into the romance than the crime when they spoke.
  • ✅ Press play if a cosy weekly watch with a puzzle running underneath sounds like your thing. New episodes are released weekly, which fits nicely into a busy schedule.

Yim put it best: he hopes watching it “feels like giving yourselves a small gift.”
