Is a S$108++ Hairy Crab Worth It? Min Jiang’s 2026 Season, Decoded

Goodwood Park Hotel’s Hairy Crab season returns to Min Jiang on Scotts Road and Min Jiang Dempsey from 12 October to 30 November 2026, so anyone in Singapore eyeing a birthday dinner or a year-end bonus treat should start doing the sums now.

For the uninitiated, hairy crab is the autumn fixation of Chinese dining, prized for the contrast between its rich golden roe and its delicate meat, and it only turns up around October and November. That short window is the appeal: miss it and you wait a year, which is the kind of scarcity that gets group chats planning.

What the ++ Means

The “++” matters: each price is subject to 10% service charge and prevailing Goods and Services Tax (GST), so the bill lands higher than the menu figure.

The Michelin Guide’s 2026 read on Singapore dining says people want focused cooking, regional Chinese cuisines, and relaxed rooms that keep fine-dining attention to detail. A seasonal menu built around one ingredient fits that brief neatly, and Goodwood Park Hotel’s two restaurants take it in different directions.

Scotts Road: Where the Set Wins

Min Jiang has been at Goodwood Park Hotel since 1982, serving Cantonese and Sichuan cooking under Master Chef Chan Hwan Kee, and its hairy crab menu is dine-in only at lunch and dinner. The purist’s order is the Steamed Hairy Crab at S$108++ each, or the same price for the Steamed Hairy Crab with Glutinous Rice served in a Bamboo Basket, where the sticky rice soaks up the crab’s juices as it steams.

The new arrival is the Pan-seared Rice Noodle Roll with Dried Shrimp and Hairy Crab Roe Gravy, golden pan-crisped rolls under a thick, umami-heavy gravy, and it costs S$108++ as well. That’s a whole crab’s worth of money for a noodle dish, so treat it as a plate for the table to share.

One detail makes the decision easy. The six-course Hairy Crab Bliss Set Menu costs S$168++ per person and includes both the Hairy Crab Trio Platter (S$42++ on its own, with a crab roe xiao long bao, a new steamed pork patty, and a deep-fried yam pastry) and a whole steamed crab. Those two alone add up to S$150 à la carte, which means S$18 more buys hot and sour soup with prawn dumpling, steamed sea perch, fried rice with char siew, and dessert. Easy maths!

The Hairy Crab Indulgence Set Menu at S$198++ goes another way, because there’s no whole crab in it at all. The roe shows up in a bisque with crabmeat and potato and in that new rice noodle roll, alongside pan-seared scallops with truffle sauce, which makes it the pick for anyone who loves the flavour but dreads dismantling a shell in front of a date.

Dempsey: Ginger Wine and Claypots

Over at Dempsey Road, the MICHELIN-listed Min Jiang Dempsey is led by Master Chef Goh Chee Kong, who has been with the restaurant since it opened. The house signature is the Steamed Hairy Crab with Ginger Rice Wine at S$108++, and the hotel says the fragrant rice wine is there to bring out the crab’s natural sweetness.

The dish with the best backstory is the Sizzling Hairy Crab in Claypot, which first appeared on the restaurant’s “Memories of Shanghai” menu and now joins the hairy crab line-up at S$108++. It’s Chef Goh’s take on Shanghai’s popular crab roe rice, inspired by his time in the city, and it arrives sizzling with vinegar on the side for a tangy finish!

Two more plates are new here. The Steamed Spanish Kurobuta Pork Patty topped with Hairy Crab is S$118++, the priciest single à la carte item across both restaurants, and the Fried Rice with Crab Roe, Crabmeat and Egg is S$78++ per order. The gentler way in is Dempsey’s own Trio Platter at S$30++ per person (minimum two), which brings steamed egg with crab roe, morel mushrooms stuffed with shrimp paste, and deep-fried soft-shell crab.

As for sets, the Hairy Crab Joy Set Menu at S$188++ pairs the platter and the ginger rice wine crab with pan-fried U.S. Kurobuta pork and steamed mee sua (thin wheat noodles) with live prawns. The Hairy Crab Supreme Set Menu at S$218++ puts crab into five of its six courses, including the Braised Hairy Crab Roe, Crab Meat in Pomegranate Egg with Golden Broth that costs S$42++ by itself.

So, Which One to Book?

For a first hairy crab dinner, the Bliss set at Scotts Road is the smart booking, since it’s the cheapest of the four and still puts a whole crab in front of each person. Crab devotees who want roe in nearly every course should head to Dempsey for the Supreme, and a pair who only want a taste can share Dempsey’s Trio Platter for S$60++ before ordering one claypot crab between them.

Two practical notes are worth knowing before you call. Goodwood Park Hotel Gourmet cardmembers get 10% off hairy crab à la carte orders, with other terms and conditions applying, and the discount is listed for the à la carte menu only. Every menu is subject to seasonal availability while stocks last, so the earlier weeks of the run are the safer bet.

At this level, what you’re paying for is the calendar as much as the crab. A dish that is on only from 12 October to 30 November gives a dinner a reason to happen now, and that’s the pull for diners who would rather spend on one memorable meal than five forgettable ones.
