Storage is the least glamorous part of making content, right up until a progress bar crawling through a weekend’s footage at 2am is all that stands between you and bed. Samsung’s fix is on sale in Singapore now, exclusively on the Samsung Online Store: the Samsung P9 Portable SSD, a USB4 drive that starts at a recommended retail price (RRP) of S$459. The cheaper Samsung P7 Portable SSD follows from S$388 on 10 October 2026, on the Samsung Online Store and at selected retail partners.
Samsung Electronics Singapore announced both drives on 8 October 2026, in capacities from 1TB to 8TB. An SSD, or solid-state drive, is storage with no moving parts, and USB4 is the faster connection standard the pair is built around. The P9 is the flagship aimed at people who shoot and edit for a living, while the P7 is pitched as the everyday drive that hops between your devices.

4,000MB/s, on Paper
Samsung rates the P9 for sequential read speeds of up to 4,000MB/s and write speeds of up to 3,800MB/s, figures that come from its own internal testing with the cable in the box. The company says that’s roughly twice the performance of its previous-generation Samsung T9 portable SSD.

Sequential speeds describe big continuous files, which is exactly what video is, and at that ceiling a 100GB project folder reads in about 25 seconds.
The other headline is 12K direct recording, which Samsung says lets creators capture, store, and edit large RAW photos and ultra-high-resolution video without the drive getting in the way. Samsung calls the P9 the world’s first 8TB USB4 portable SSD supporting speeds of up to 4,000MB/s, and the drive picked up a CES 2026 Innovation Award earlier this year.
The P7 Goes Everywhere
Most people don’t shoot 12K, and that’s where the P7 makes its case. It runs on USB4 too, and Samsung lists it as compatible with desktops, laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, and cameras, so one drive can hold your phone footage, your game library, and your backups.
That range matters more than a speed record if your week involves filming on a phone, cutting on a laptop, and winding down on a console. Both drives have been tested to withstand drops of up to two metres, along with shock and vibration, according to Samsung, so a tumble out of a tote bag shouldn’t end a project.
Jacus Long, Director & Head, Brand Memory, at Samsung Electronics Singapore, is the executive fronting the local launch. He ties the range to files that keep growing across video, photography, and gaming, saying “fast and reliable storage has become more important than ever.”
Check Your Port First
The P9 comes with one catch, and it lives on the other end of the cable. A speed of 4,000MB/s works out to 32 gigabits per second, so the port on your computer has to carry that much. That means one of these:
- USB4 at 40Gbps
- Thunderbolt 4
- Thunderbolt 5
Samsung’s own fine print says performance varies with the host device, the cable, and the system it’s plugged into. Plug the P9 into a slower port and you’ve paid flagship money for speed you can’t reach. Check the port before you check out.
The people who’ll feel the difference are the ones moving huge files daily: videographers offloading cards between shoots, editors working straight off an external drive, and gamers shuffling large installs. For a folder of holiday photos, the gap between fast and very fast disappears.
No Discount for Going Big
The oddest thing about the price list is how little it rewards sizing up. The P9 costs S$459 for 1TB and S$3,739 for 8TB.

Buy the capacity you’ll fill this year, in other words, because there’s no bulk bargain waiting at the top.
The gap between the two drives is the more useful number. At 1TB the P9 costs S$71 more than the P7, an easy upgrade if your machine has the right port, but at 8TB the difference grows to S$651.

So which one?
- Pick the P9 (1TB or 2TB) if your laptop has USB4 or Thunderbolt and video is your job, because the premium over the P7 is small and the speed is the whole point.
- Hold out for the P7 if you’re anyone else, and put the savings towards a bigger capacity.
Compare the two on Samsung’s Portable SSD P Series page, and may your next export finish before the kopi does.
