Most power fantasies hand the underdog a cheat code. SSS-Class Revival Hunter hands him a coffin instead and tells him to climb in, again and again, because that’s the only way his power switches on. Crunchyroll confirmed on 9 September 2026 that the Korean webcomic and web novel is getting an anime, premiering in January 2027, and the campaign went live the same day.
The series streams on Crunchyroll worldwide, excluding Asia, with the Indian subcontinent, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Malaysia carved back in. That puts fans here on the right side of the line. The teaser trailer, key visual, Japanese cast, and staff list all dropped at once, so there’s already something to chew on while the wait for Winter 2027 begins.
The Skill That Kills Him First
The setup is classic tower-climbing territory. A monster-filled tower appears out of nowhere, and Hunters pour in chasing glory and riches. Gongja Kim sits at the bottom of the pile, an F-rank nobody who spends his days envying the Flame Emperor, the top Hunter of them all.
Then his luck turns. He teams up with the Sword Emperor and gains a rare S-rank skill, and the catch is the entire pitch: he has to die for it to activate. GameBrief scored the webtoon 7.5 out of 10 in a June 2026 review and summed the system up in one line: “die to copy skills, rewind time”.
That’s a nastier engine than the usual overnight glow-up. Every upgrade is paid for in advance, in the worst currency going. The story keeps asking how many times a man can settle that bill before something in him stops coming back.
Two Voices, One Glowing Card
Takeo Otsuka voices Gongja in Japanese, opposite Satoshi Hino as the Sword Emperor. The teaser and key visual start Gongja at the bottom of the ladder, looking up at those who made it, with a mysterious card glowing with light and the Sword Emperor watching silently from behind. For a series built on repeat deaths, opening on the quiet before the first one is a confident play.
That pairing is where the comedy lives. Next Panel’s June 2026 review of the webtoon credits its “sly, scheming lead and real comic timing”, which hands Otsuka plenty of mischief to work with. If the anime gets the double act between Gongja and Hino’s Sword Emperor right, the laughs will carry the stretches between the fights.
A Young Studio, a Veteran Crew
Animation comes from STUDIO fu, based in Musashino City, Tokyo. Its company profile dates the studio’s founding to January 2025 and listed 22 employees in April 2026. This is its first full TV anime, which makes it the most interesting variable in the announcement and the name fans will size up first when the fights start.
The people around it have decades on the clock. Director Hiroaki Sakurai has Cromartie High School, Di Gi Charat, and Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan on his record, and that last one is a comedy whose hero gets clubbed to death and revived as a running gag. For a series where dying is the power-up, that’s an apt background to bring along. His most recent TV series as director was Studio Deen’s The Dark History of the Reincarnated Villainess, which aired from 9 October to 25 December 2025, and he has storyboard credits on The Dangers in My Heart and Honey Lemon Soda too.
Sayuri Oba writes the scripts, so she’s the one who has to pace all those deaths across a season.
The name to get excited about is character designer Takahiro Yoshimatsu, whose CV takes in the 1999 Hunter x Hunter, Slayers, and Wolf’s Rain. In his staff comment for the September announcement, he said the original work had “so many appealing characters” that he “immediately felt the urge to draw them”. He called it “exactly the nutrients Yoshimatsu needs right now” and said he was “happy to be working with Director Sakurai again after such a long time”. He’s designing the main characters only, and a tower story lives or dies on its main characters.
Solo Leveling Set the Bar
Solo Leveling premiered in January 2024 and returned in January 2025, and it’s the yardstick this one will be held to. By 27 May 2026 it held a 4.9 out of 5 from more than a million user ratings. Platform-engagement reports built on Crunchyroll’s data call it the service’s most-watched anime ever, and its highest rated by user score, ahead of One Piece and Demon Slayer.
Then came the trophies. It swept the 2025 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Anime of the Year included, from a nominations list we ran in full at the time. Season 2 went on to win Best Animation and Best Action at the 2026 ceremony.
The first Korean webtoon wave landed differently. In 2020, Crunchyroll co-financed adaptations with Naver Webtoon to prove Korean comics could hold their own next to Japanese manga. Tower of God (Telecom Animation Film) and The God of High School (MAPPA) led that push, and each topped Crunchyroll’s charts in 10 countries and territories that year. One industry compilation credits The God of High School with around 100 million streams.
Reception split, though. Tower of God sits at 7.55 on MyAnimeList from about 613,000 scores, and its first season squeezed the manhwa (the Korean term for these comics) into something watchable but thin. The God of High School drew praise for spectacular fights and heat for a rushed plot that moved faster than it made sense.
SSS-Class Revival Hunter takes the same January slot Crunchyroll handed Solo Leveling twice, and that choice says plenty about how much the streamer is betting on it. The lesson from 2020 is that spectacle alone won’t hold an audience for a full season. The lesson from 2024 is that a well-paced underdog arc will. A hero who has to die before he levels up gives this show every reason to take its time.
Should You Read It First?
Yes, and start with the webtoon. It’s the version the anime announcement sends fans to, with the English edition on Tapas and the Korean one on KakaoPage. Anyone who prefers prose can pick up the English web novel on WuxiaWorld.
Korean readers rate the webtoon highly. NamuWiki, the Korean fan wiki, logs praise for how faithfully it reproduces the novel and points to the 10th-floor boss fight as the stretch where readers got hooked. Make that your checkpoint before January.
Community scores sit near 8.3 out of 10 on AniList and MangaUpdates, according to that Next Panel review, which gave the webtoon 7.6 itself. The review says the story takes a tired premise and makes it fun. It also argues the revival skill drains some of the tension. Next Panel’s roundup of manhwa like Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint makes the warmer case, recommending it to “readers who want systems with heart” for “more emotional arcs than its power-fantasy title suggests”.
That tension complaint is fair, and it’s where the adaptation can do what the page can’t. A death you sit through in motion, with sound and a voice actor, hits harder than a death you scroll past.
What Crunchyroll Hasn’t Said Yet
For now, January 2027 is a season window with no day attached. The premiere date, simulcast time, episode count, and dub roster haven’t been announced.
Access is the part to plan around. Crunchyroll shut its long-running free, ad-supported tier on 31 December 2025, so you’ll need a paid plan: Fan, Mega Fan, or Ultimate Fan. Regional price listings put Singapore’s entry-level Fan tier at about S$5.48 a month and Ultimate Fan at S$19.98 a month. That cheapest plan works out to roughly one kopi, the local coffee-shop brew, a week.
If this is the only show you’re signing up for, Fan is the sensible buy, since any paid tier gets you the series. In the US, the same three tiers cost US$9.99, US$13.99, and US$17.99 a month after a US$2 rise in February 2026.
