Michael Jackson played two sold-out concerts in Singapore in 1993. Odds are you were still learning to walk, or hadn’t arrived on the planet at all.
In August 2027, the next best thing lands. MJ The Michael Jackson Musical won four Tony Awards (Broadway’s top honours) in 2022, and it’s opening a limited season at Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands. Base Entertainment Asia runs Sands Theatre and has presented shows like HAMILTON and WICKED The Musical. It announced the news on 9 September 2026 with original Broadway producers Lia Vollack and John Branca, plus Michael Cassel, the producer who took MJ to Australia.
Base Entertainment Asia chief executive Chantal Prudhomme knows exactly who this one is for: the people who missed the real thing. For them, she said, the show is “perhaps the closest they will come to experiencing the energy and magic of Michael Jackson live”. Tickets aren’t on sale yet, but the official waitlist is open until 27 September 2026, 11.59pm.
Inside the 1992 Rehearsal Room
MJ is set in 1992 and takes you into rehearsals for the Dangerous World Tour, the huge run of shows Jackson played after his Dangerous album. The story is told through a journalist from MTV (Music Television) who gets rare access to the rehearsal room. Lynn Nottage wrote the script. She has won two Pulitzer Prizes, for the plays Ruined and Sweat, which is a lot of writing muscle for a show built on pop songs.
Here’s the part that should make local fans sit up. The tour being put together on stage is the same one that brought Jackson to Singapore for those two sold-out concerts in 1993. So Sands Theatre is staging the prequel to a gig your parents may well remember.
You’ll hear more than 25 of his hits, including Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Man in the Mirror, and Thriller. A jukebox musical is a show built from existing hits, and the usual headache is cramming those songs into a plot. The rehearsal setting fixes that neatly: the whole story is about getting a tour ready, so every number has a reason to be there.
4 Tonys, 8 Million Audience Members
At the 2022 Tony Awards, MJ had 10 nominations and won four. Myles Frost took Best Actor in a Musical for playing Jackson. The other three went to choreography, lighting design, and sound design. Look at that list again. Apart from Frost’s win, every award went to something that hits you right in your seat, which tells you this show wants you to feel it first.
Christopher Wheeldon directed the show and created its dance moves. He later won an Olivier Award (London’s version of the Tonys) for Best Theatre Choreography in the West End. “Michael Jackson transformed the relationship between music and movement in a way few artists ever have,” he said in the Singapore announcement. Fair enough: when a choreographer is in charge, the show was always going to lead with its feet.
The rest of the creative team reads like a theatre fan’s dream line-up. Paul Tazewell has won a Tony, an Emmy, and an Academy Award, and his work includes Hamilton and Wicked. Here, he designs the costumes. Six-time Tony winner Natasha Katz does the lighting, while Derek McLane, known for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, designs the sets.
More than 8 million people have seen the show on Broadway, in London’s West End, in Hamburg, Germany, and on tours of the United States and Australia. The London season at the Prince Edward Theatre lasted almost two years, from March 2024 to February 2026. In New York, the show is still playing at the Neil Simon Theatre on Broadway, where the team celebrated Jackson’s birthday right outside the venue.
Dazzle First, Depth Second
Critics mostly agree on the spectacle. The Chicago Tribune called MJ “brilliantly choreographed and magnificently evocative”. The Hollywood Reporter found it “captivating and hard to shake”.
The bigger conversation is about what the story leaves out. MJ is staged by special arrangement with the Estate of Michael Jackson. Producer John Branca was Jackson’s lawyer for many years and is now one of the estate’s co-executors. American news network CNN pointed out that the show is “set in 1992, before the first batch of allegations were made against him”. That means the child sexual abuse allegations aren’t part of the story. His estate continues to deny them.
So who should go? Book it for the moves and the music, because that’s what those Tonys rewarded. If you want the full, complicated story of the man, pair it with a proper biography.
