Remember when every gadget worth owning was see-through? Republic of Gamers (ROG), the gaming arm of ASUS, has not forgotten. For its 20th anniversary, the brand has put a new handheld in translucent black plastic and paired it with matching augmented reality (AR) glasses. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 and ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses Ultimate Bundle opens for pre-order in Singapore on 14 September 2026 at S$3,599.
That’s a long name for a box that holds plenty. Next to the handheld and glasses sit a dbrand Killswitch case, a 68W charger, and a custom Pelican hard case. The whole lot is sold through a single channel, the ASUS Online Store. ROG calls the handheld “a throwback to gaming two decades ago and a vision of what’s next”, and the hardware inside supports that line.
The name should ring a bell. The ROG Xbox Ally line first surfaced in June 2025, when Microsoft and ASUS revealed two Xbox-branded handhelds, the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. The X20 is the birthday remix of that family, made to honour the brand’s founding in 2006.
A Handheld You Can See Into
The shell is the first thing you notice. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 uses translucent black plastic, so you can peek at the revamped cooling system and a gold-accented internal frame. Anyone who owned a see-through Game Boy (or begged their parents for one) will get the reference in about half a second.
Under the retro skin, the specs belong firmly in 2026. The X20 debuts ROG’s new Nebula HDR (high dynamic range) Display, a 7.4-inch OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panel, and runs on AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor. That’s a bigger screen than the 7-inch display on the ROG Ally X from 2024. Because each OLED pixel lights itself, the dark corners of a horror game stay properly black.
ROG made this edition exclusively for the anniversary, and it looks the part. Most gaming handhelds live in a bag. This one will probably spend some of its life on a shelf, next to whatever old consoles its owner can’t bear to throw out.
Dressed Up by dbrand and Pelican
The accessories are where the bundle makes its case to collectors. dbrand built a custom Killswitch case for the X20 with a kickstand, rugged grips, and gold-and-black anniversary accents. It’s the everyday armour that keeps the handheld scratch-free in a backpack.
The cleverest detail is the skin. dbrand printed a circuit board pattern on the face of the X20, taken straight from the device’s own internals, so the outside mirrors what the translucent shell reveals underneath. Even the joystick covers get the treatment, with the ROG logo on top and a touch more control under your thumbs.
For travel, there’s a custom Pelican Protector Case with red ROG latches and an exclusive 20th anniversary badge. Pelican is the name behind those tough, latch-shut hard cases, and this one keeps the handheld and its accessories safe in transit. The 68W adapter completes the kit, so everything charges and moves as one unit.
171 Inches in Front of You
The other star of the box is the ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 Gaming AR Glasses. Plug them into the X20 with one USB-C cable (the oval Universal Serial Bus plug most phones charge with) and a 171-inch virtual screen appears to hover four metres ahead. For scale, 171 inches is roughly 4.3 metres from corner to corner, and it’s coming from something that sits on your nose.
The display is a 240Hz micro-OLED panel, which means it refreshes 240 times a second, with a near-instant 0.01ms response time. Its 57° field of view (FOV) covers 95% of your focused field of vision, according to ROG. Audio comes courtesy of Bose.
Two tracking modes make the glasses practical. Native 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) tracking lets the screen follow your head as you turn, while Anchor Mode pins it in one spot during play. The glasses hook into the handheld’s Command Center menu and match its black and gold colourway, a pairing ROG calls “the ultimate mobile gaming battlestation”.
Picture a long-haul flight. A racing game fills a screen the size of a living room wall, the handheld does the heavy lifting in your lap, and the Pelican case waits in the overhead bin. That’s the scenario this bundle is built around, and it’s a convincing one.
Who Is S$3,599 For?
S$3,599 is serious money, and ROG is pitching this bundle at collectors. The appeal is having the whole setup in one box, all in matching anniversary colours. Tracking down each piece separately and trying to match the look would be a headache.
The ideal owner travels often, games on the move, and has followed ROG long enough to feel something when gold glints through smoked plastic. The bundle is sold only online, so there’s no point trekking to Sim Lim Square (Singapore’s go-to electronics mall) to find one. For everyone else, it’s a preview of where portable gaming could head next: huge virtual screens that pack down small.
Twenty years in, ROG has turned its own history into something you can see straight through.
