The 4pm brownout is practically a national ritual. Brightness at zero, dark mode on, group chat left on read while you scan the mall for a plug nobody with a laptop has claimed. The POCO X8 arrived in Singapore on 4 September 2026 promising to end that particular routine.
POCO calls it an endurance ace, which is marketing. The number underneath is not. The X8 gets an 8,340mAh (typ) battery, a figure that reads like a power bank spec sheet with the wrong logo printed on it, while POCO’s own step-up model, the X8 Pro, sits at 6,500mAh. The cheaper phone out-batteries the dearer one by roughly 1,840mAh.
POCO puts the generational jump at 63.2% over the POCO X7, a phone the company was happy to call a large battery twelve months ago at 5,110mAh. When we reviewed the Vivo S1 back in 2019, 4,500mAh earned the word “massive”. The X8 nearly doubles it.
Bigger Than the Power Bank
Someone in Xiaomi’s accessories division should feel slightly awkward about this. The same Singapore store that sells the X8 stocks the Xiaomi Super Slim Magnetic Power Bank at 5,000mAh. The phone holds about 67% more charge than the brick you would buy to rescue it, and roughly 83% of what the 10,000mAh model gives you.
The arithmetic pays off because of a second spec: 22.5W wired reverse charging. Plug a friend’s dying phone into the X8 and you become the outlet. POCO’s footnote limits that rate to devices verified in its own labs, so the cursed cable at the bottom of your bag may have opinions.
The alternative is carrying a separate pack. Anker’s 45W Retractable Nano Power Bank holds 10,000mAh, good for about two full charges of a typical flagship. The X8 gets you most of the way there with nothing extra in your pocket, which is the whole pitch.
What All That Battery Weighs
Physics does not hand out free lunches. The X8 weighs 223g and measures 163.45 x 78.27 x 8.6mm, so it is a heavy phone that somehow avoids being a thick one. Credit the silicon-carbon cell, 13% silicon by content, which stores more energy in the same space.
Charging needs expectation management. 67W HyperCharge moves quickly on a normal phone. Pour it into a tank 63% larger than last year’s and the clock stretches proportionally, so this is not the phone that goes flat to full while you shower.
Endurance First, Benchmarks Later
The chip is a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 on a 4nm process with an integrated Adreno GPU. POCO’s language around it is telling: fast app launches, smooth multitasking, responsive task switching. Nobody is claiming a benchmark crown. Read the X8 as a phone that runs forever and games competently, and the price makes complete sense.
The screen handles the entertainment half. It’s a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED at 2772 x 1280 and 120Hz, with a 3,500 nit peak measured on small highlights and about 1,060 nits across the full panel in typical use. That second figure is the honest one, and it holds up in a hawker centre at noon.
Six Years of Battery, Certified
The specification deserving more attention than the headline number is ageing. The cell keeps at least 80% of its capacity after 1,600 charge cycles, with a five-star Battery Performance Certification from TÜV SÜD behind the claim. Charge it daily and that works out to roughly six years before decay becomes obvious.
Battery anxiety has a second form: the two-year-old phone that used to last till dinner and now taps out at lunch. POCO is selling against that version of the problem too, and it’s the smarter of the two arguments.
Waterproof, With One Catch
The durability list runs long for a S$499 phone. IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, a claimed 72 hours of immersion at two metres, a three-metre drop rating, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2. There’s a dedicated Underwater Mode for shooting while you are down there.
The cameras never made the announcement copy, which tells you something. You get a 50MP main sensor with optical image stabilisation, a 2MP depth sensor, and a 16MP selfie camera. Video caps at 1080p at 30fps, front and back.
So the phone survives three days underwater, and the footage of that adventure comes home at 1080p30. Someone in the product meeting picked stamina over sensors, and stuck to it.
The Price and the Fine Print
