Remember the days when you’d gather friends and family, summoning your inner Spielberg as you dreamed of making the greatest video? For many, that passion still lingers, so for those with an interest in filmmaking and a heart for change, 3 Degrees’ “Voices for Change” Student Video Challenge is calling your name! It’s not every day a chance like this comes your way, and this is the golden ticket to shine a light on the amazing charities in Singapore and show what you’ve got!
For the uninitiated, 3 Degrees is a Singapore-based platform that aims to connect NGOs with socially conscious individuals by sharing impactful stories and causes. The Voices for Change Challenge echoes this same ethos from 3 Degrees, but this time, the baton has been passed on to you!
That’s right! Through this competition, 3 Degrees wants to inspire a generation to weave stories that spotlight charities in Singapore with one of the most powerful forms of creative expression, a video! How will making these videos support NGOs like what 3 Degrees does, I hear you ask? Well, not only can these videos raise awareness of these charities, but you’ll inspire others to get involved in said charities too!
Are you already itching to know more about Voices for Change? Then grab your camera and come along as I’ll guide you through how to enter this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a difference and share your creativity with Singapore!
Competition Criteria
Before you dive headfirst into preparing for the competition, what exactly are the criteria? Well, Voices for Change is open to students over 18 in Singapore, including those studying in ITEs, Polytechnics, Universities, and more!
As for what you need to include in your video submission, it’s plain and simple. All you have to do is fulfil these few checkmarks. Produce a 30-second to 2-minute video highlighting your chosen charity’s work and impact. And just so you know, submissions last till 31 August 2024.
What should these videos be about? The scope is limitless, so let your creativity loose! Whether it is a “Day in the Life” video where you follow a charity volunteer or benefactor for a day or a challenge video where you create a challenge related to the charity’s cause to encourage viewers to participate, the possibilities are endless!
To get ahead of the crowd, allow me to share the judging criteria! Your submission will be evaluated by a judging panel and through public voting, with the winners to be announced at an awards ceremony towards the end of the year.
Videos will be judged based on Creativity (25%), which means how creatively the video conveys its message and engages the audience. Another criterion to note is Technical Quality (25%) — it’s all about the professionalism and technical execution of the video!
Not only must your video be creative and of high technical quality, but it will also be judged on its Engagement (25%), with public voting determined by likes, comments, and shares involved in the judging process.
And finally, the most crucial aspect is the Contribution to the Cause (25%). This criterion refers to the amount of funds generated through the video! So make sure to consider how your video can encourage fund contributions!
A competition means prizes await you, and 3 Degrees is just the gift that keeps on giving! The winning team will receive a cash prize of S$10,000, with an additional S$5000 awarded to their featured charity! As for second and third place, you will also receive just as attractive prizes, which ensures you and your chosen charity will benefit from your hard work and creativity.
The grand prize sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Now, before you rush to start your brainstorming, I’m sure one major hurdle you might foresee yourself having to get over is choosing your charity.
Charities
To aid you in your decision-making, 3 Degrees has curated a list of charities for your choosing! With 28 charities to pick from, it might still seem like one too many choices, so lucky for you, I’m here to help! While I can’t possibly describe every single charity, what I can do is shine a light on a few charities you can consider!
First up is for animal lovers! For those who wish to spotlight and spread some love to our loyal furry companions, you can focus your video on K9Assistance, the only organisation in Singapore that promotes the acceptance and use of different types of Assistance Dogs.
K9Assistance offers educational talks, consultations, and matching of Assistance Dogs with Persons with Disabilities from accredited Assistance Dog organisations. Supporting hardworking dogs and helping people in need? How can you say no to that?
Another intriguing charity organisation I’m sure you’ll have no problem saying yes to is ItsRainingRaincoats, a Singapore charity that aims to connect migrant workers and Singapore residents.
ItsRainingRaincoats’ noble mission not only includes the seamless integration of migrant workers into Singapore’s community. They also run initiatives for the migrant workers’ benefit, including learning and welfare programs!
Migrant workers are the ones who practically carry the foundation of our country’s progress toward becoming a first-world country, so this is the perfect opportunity to give back by highlighting this amazing charity!
You can also consider the charity KampungKakis, which is another chance to support a fellow vulnerable member of the community. At this tech-powered organisation, a neighbourhood buddy system is used to support isolated and frail seniors.
