Magic is in the air in Singapore as it prepares for its first-ever magic festival. This January, the island plays host to a wide array of performances and events centred around the theme of witchcraft and wizardry that is bound to leave audiences in wonder.
The festival, titled Where The Magic Happens, will take place between 6 and 8 January at the Somerset Youth Park. It is presented by Darren Tien, one-half of Singapore’s magic duo Darren and Jerryl, and aims to highlight emerging talents and renowned artists in the magic scene.
Visitors will get to see Somerset Youth Park be turned into a magical wonderland, with visual arts installations, live music, F&B, fringe activities and featured theatrical magic shows all available at the event, all under the theme of magic.
The highlight is the six-ticketed live shows on offer at Where The Magic Happens. The headlining act comes in the form of the return of Singapore’s youngest magician duo, Darren and Jerryl. Their Dear Dreamers show presents an immersive experience for the audience, welcoming them into the Red Bus to enjoy an interactive storytelling magic show with well-known magician Ryan Goh also making a cameo appearance.
Let’s not forget to mention the five other young, and talented magicians performing at the event, including Indonesia’s Got Talent runner-up, Golden Buzzer recipient Casidy Lee, and one of Singapore’s top mentalists, Mark Wong. They will be captivating audiences at SCAPE’s underground theatre, with each performance drawing on the magician’s own theme.
Beyond the magic performances, the event also features an exciting lineup of DJs, spinning trap, future bass and ethereal sets. The lineup includes Marquee Singapore’s resident DJ, DJ Mass, DJ Mechanic, DJ Jizzy, DJ Robyn Kyra, and DJ Haiqhal. In addition, acoustic live band sets, presented by WeeJam, Low Tide, and Bandyan will also be at the festival.
Hungry? There’s food available too! Harry Potter enthusiasts can look forward to magic-themed menu items from wizardry-themed cafe Platform 1094’s pop-up stall, including their popular alcoholic drink, Flaming Brew.
Moreover, festival goers can interact and take pictures with magical kinetic art installation structures done by local producer, designer and artist Mr Low Zi Hao. Two works by Krusty Labs will also be at Somerset Youth Park. The first is Reactive Botany, a community-based light art project involving plants. Next is Light Park, an interactive light installation.
Free fringe activities will also be available for visitors to try out. Visitors can also get tattoo art services from Henn Drawn or tarot card readings from digital content creator Ms Rachel Wong, while there are roving street magic acts out and about at the festival.
Admission to the festival ground is free, while the six performances featured are ticketed from S$25 onwards. You can purchase the tickets for these performances over at Eventbrite.
This is just a glance at the illusions that await you at the festival. Immerse yourself in magical mayhem this January with fascinating acts bound to leave you wonderstruck, fun and frolicking!
