Pass Go, Collect Nostalgia: Marina Square Turns 40 with an 11m Monopoly Board

For the mall’s 40th anniversary, its Level 2 Central Atrium has become the Marina Square 40th Anniversary Monopoly Edition, a life-sized Monopoly set you walk around with friends instead of hunching over at home.

The Marina Square 40th Anniversary Monopoly Edition was created in partnership with Hasbro, the American toy company behind Monopoly. Marina Square says the board measures 11m by 11m and describes it as an interactive board that takes visitors on a nostalgic journey through four decades of retail milestones, cherished memories and festive traditions. Forty years is longer than many of the people posing on it have been alive, so the throwback theme suits the birthday perfectly.

Bigger Than Your Kopitiam Table

Anyone who has squeezed a Monopoly board onto a kopitiam table (the neighbourhood coffee shop found all over Singapore) will appreciate the scale here, starting with the oversized game tokens. According to Marina Square, the setup goes well beyond the board itself. It adds a 7m Time Tower, an 8m Christmas tree, a life-sized Advent Calendar (the countdown-to-Christmas calendar with a little door for each day, scaled up to human size) and a scattering of whimsical photo spots. Visitors can pose for festive shots with what the mall calls “iconic Monopoly characters and installations” as well.

Two installations get names of their own. Memory Lane House is a space to explore, and the Monopoly Turn & Match Memory Board is billed as interactive, joining the 11m board on that list. Together they give the photo backdrop a bit of story, which is exactly what a 40th birthday deserves.

Go in expecting a stroll with your camera out and you’ll leave happy, while a full rent-collecting, friendship-ending game is better saved for home.

Your Route Around Marina Square’s Monopoly Board

On a quick lap after work, start with the 7m Time Tower. It’s the anniversary piece where the four-decades idea gets real height, and that makes it the obvious hero shot for your feed.

Memory Lane House comes next, because its name points straight at what sets this Christmas apart from every other mall’s: the 40-year history. If you’re visiting with parents who remember the mall’s early years, this is where their stories about the old days are likely to start.

Finish at the Turn & Match Memory Board, since Marina Square invites visitors to try it, so it’s the pick for anyone who’d rather do something with their hands than stand and smile. Then step back onto the 11m board for the group photo, ideally with an oversized token in frame for scale.

Timing matters a little here. Marina Square lists its bubble showtimes as 7pm, 7.30pm and 8pm, so an evening visit lets you pair the board with a show. Switch your camera to video mode for that one!

Who Should Make the Trip

Groups will get the most out of this. Friends who want a December photo dump that isn’t another Orchard Road light-up will love the 11m board and the oversized tokens. Families get a rare holiday outing where the parents have as much to say as the kids. It’s a smart move from a 40-year-old mall, too. Instead of asking people to come in and shop, Marina Square is giving them reasons to linger, reminisce and photograph the place. An atrium-sized game board is very hard to scroll past.

Few malls stay part of people’s weekends for 40 years, and fewer still celebrate with a board you can stand on. Round up the group chat, save the Time Tower for your hero shot, and check Marina Square’s official website and social pages for opening hours before you head down. Pass Go and collect a photo you’ll still be sharing at the mall’s 50th!
