New Phone Every 6 Months? Swap Mobile’s StarHub-Powered Plans Come with a 24-Month Catch

Two-year phone contracts have a habit of outlasting your enthusiasm for the phone itself. Swap Mobile, which went live online in Singapore on 16 October 2026, says you can request a new handset every six months and adjust your plan every month. Its launch prices start at S$1 a month for SIM-only plans and S$5.90 a month for its phone subscriptions, for the first three months.

That pitch lands squarely on anyone in Singapore who has watched a newer model launch while still owing 18 months on the old one. The idea is promising, and the fine print deserves a careful read.

Who Is Swap Mobile?

Swap Mobile is a digital-first mobile virtual network operator, or MVNO. That means it sells plans under its own brand but runs on another telco’s towers, in this case StarHub’s nationwide 4G and 5G network. If you’ve used giga or a similar budget brand, you’ll know the model.

The newcomer belongs to Swap Asia Group, a company that has spent more than two decades distributing devices, running trade-in programmes, and selling device protection across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Taiwan. That background explains why the phone and the protection sit at the centre of this launch, with data allowances playing a supporting role.

Wong Peng Yew, who is Executive Director of Swap Telecommunications and a StarHub veteran of more than six years, put it plainly in the launch release: “Singapore consumers don’t need another provider simply competing to give them more gigabytes. The market has moved beyond that.” It’s a bold line from a telco, and the six-month swap is the feature that has to back it up.

The Six-Month Swap, Explained

The Device Subscription bundles a phone, a 4G or 5G SIM plan, and protection into one monthly fee, with no upfront device cost. The line-up covers selected flagship and mid-range models from Apple, Samsung, OPPO, and Vivo, from the budget-friendly Samsung Galaxy A17 to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

During the launch promotion, subscriptions cost S$5.90 to S$105.90 a month for the first three months. From month four, regular pricing of S$29.90 to S$119.90 a month applies. Swap Mobile describes the promotion as limited-time.

Now for the catch, which is worth spelling out. Swapping after six months means returning your current phone and starting a fresh 24-month subscription with the new one. You never own the device, because ownership stays with Swap Mobile.

Some rough maths helps here. Over 24 months, you pay for your SIM plan and protection but are left with no phone to keep or resell at the end. That’s the real trade-off: you pay for novelty and peace of mind, not for an asset.

Who Should Bite, and Who Shouldn’t

The flagship end makes the most sense on paper. Anyone who’d otherwise drop a big sum on the iPhone 18 Pro Max or a foldable, then worry about cracking it or losing resale value, gets protection and an exit route after six months. The Galaxy A17 tier is a harder sell, because budget phones lose less value to begin with. Someone who keeps a mid-ranger for years will probably spend less buying outright and pairing it with a cheap SIM-only plan.

If ownership matters to you, Swap Mobile sells selected devices outright at full retail price, or through bank instalment plans running from 3 to 36 months, depending on the bank.

Slide Your Plan Up or Down

For many people, the more useful feature is the SIM-only plan, which comes with no long-term commitment. A slider in the app lets you set your data, talk time, and SMS allowances, and you can raise or lower them each month without switching providers. Exam month with no time for TikTok? Turn it down!

Regular prices start at S$10 a month for 4G and S$15 a month for 5G, with a launch offer from S$1 a month for the first three months. Every 4G plan includes 10GB of APAC (Asia-Pacific) roaming data. The 5G plans include 25GB of APAC roaming plus 10GB of global roaming, and you can add extra data for Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.

Those roaming allowances are where Swap Mobile stands out. Compare local data allowances in the app before you commit.

The Protection Part

Every Device Subscription includes Swap Protect Pro at no extra monthly cost. You get unlimited repairs and up to three combined exchange and replacement requests in any 12-month period, with no more than two replacements.

SIM-only customers get Screen Crack Protect, which you activate in the app’s Device Protection section. It covers one claim a year of up to S$250 at brand-authorised service centres. Claims for both go through the Swap Mobile app or the customer service line on 6521 6833, and all coverage is subject to policy terms, exclusions, and claims processes.

Swap Mobile calls itself the first provider in Singapore to combine phone, plan, and protection in a subscription with a six-month swap option. StarHub’s Vidur Rattan, Chief of Consumer Business, said the brand puts “device protection at the heart of the mobile service proposition.” After launch, the company plans to add travel connectivity, streaming, and insurance to its subscription.

When and Where to Sign Up

Sign-ups are open online now. Swap Mobile’s official launch is on 19 October 2026, when its plans will also be sold at selected partner retailers across up to 27 locations.

The six-month swap will win the headlines, but the monthly slider and generous roaming are what most people will feel day to day. If you travel around the region often, or if two-year contracts have always felt like a trap, the S$1 introductory offer is a cheap way to try it before deciding whether a phone subscription suits you. Build a plan or browse the phones on the Swap Mobile website, and follow @swapmobilesg on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok for new promotions!
