Run for Hope 2026: a Cancer Patient Designed the Shirt You’ll Run In

Run For Hope 2026 returns to Marina Barrage, 8 Marina Gardens Dr, on Sunday, 29 November, with the race village opening at 6.15am. Its non-competitive 5km and 10km routes start from S$35, and registration is open now on the Run For Hope website. According to organiser Four Seasons Hotel Singapore, this is the first year runners will get an official event T-shirt, and the woman who designed it is a cancer patient herself.

That detail matters more than it first sounds. Plenty of charity run tees end up as gym rags or sleepwear within a month. A shirt carrying a patient’s own story in its design is the kind you keep wearing long after race morning.

From Corporate Desk to Full-Time Art

The designer is Cindy Neo, a patient at the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), which co-organises the run with Four Seasons Hotel Singapore. In a statement released by the hotel on 15 July 2026, Neo said her first cancer diagnosis in 2017 pushed her to leave her corporate career and commit to art full-time.

She went on to found Room To Imagine, an artist-led studio, and her work leans on abstract, flowing shapes inspired by galaxies and oceans. Those subjects sit about as far from a spreadsheet as art can get, which tells you how completely she changed course.

A Ribbon That Won’t Sit Still

The shirt carries that same visual language. At its centre is the familiar cancer-awareness ribbon, but Neo said she made it “alive and in motion” instead of fixed. In her telling, the movement reflects both the run itself and her own continuing journey since diagnosis.

That’s the smartest call on the whole shirt. An awareness ribbon usually lives as a static pin on a lapel, so animating it turns a symbol people glance past into something that moves with the body wearing it.

The finished design runs a magenta-to-blue gradient across the front and back, with wave motifs, a running figure and text marking the event’s 33rd edition in support of cancer research. It reads far more like a piece from an independent artist’s studio than corporate merch, and that’s because it came from one.

33 Editions of Running for Research

Run For Hope began in 1993, and the organisers say it has brought together more than 20,000 participants across its 33 years. The money raised goes to the NCC Research Fund, which backs NCCS-led research into earlier diagnosis, more effective treatment and better patient care.

Both distances are non-competitive, so nobody is ranking you against the person in front. Walking a stretch along the water at Marina Barrage is completely fair game. The organiser pitches the run as open to all ages and fitness levels, and the handwritten bibs runners have pinned up at past editions show who most people are running for in the first place.

First-timers: The 5km is the clear pick. Most people can walk-jog it with no training, and since the race village opens at 6.15am, you’re in for an early start whichever distance you choose, so you might as well keep the run itself friendly.

Weekend runners: The 10km gives the new shirt a proper outing.

Groups: Rope in colleagues, your run club or your old school kakis (Singlish for close mates) to qualify for the group rate. The S$5 each of you saves can go back into a donation.

Book either distance on the Run For Hope website.

The Sydney Prize, Explained

Every participant goes into a Lucky Draw. The headline prize works differently. The top 10 registered participants who raise the highest contributions will be in the running for a pair of Singapore Airlines return Business Class tickets to Western Sydney. Read that wording carefully: it puts the top ten fundraisers in the running, not straight onto the plane.

It’s still a welcome nudge. Most runners sign up, pay the fee and stop there. This prize rewards the person willing to drop their fundraising page into the family group chat and follow up with that one uncle who leaves everyone on read. You can track where fundraisers stand on the Run For Hope contribution leaderboard.

Can’t Make It? Give Anyway

If 29 November already clashes with a wedding or a work trip, you don’t have to sit this one out.

A charity run is only as meaningful as the reason you turn up for it, and this year Cindy Neo has printed that reason across your chest in galaxies, oceans and a ribbon that refuses to stand still. Secure your spot at the official Run For Hope site and get your group together for the cheaper rate. If Sunday sunrises at Marina Barrage aren’t for you, a contribution through the Run For Hope leaderboard still goes towards the research NCCS patients are counting on.
