Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo goes up for pre-order on StarHub at 9pm on Friday, 16 October 2026, and the banner price is S$0 with no trade-in. That zero applies to one combination only: the 256GB model on the S$188-a-month Platinum Elite plan, which comes to S$6,768 in plan fees over the 36-month contract.
That is a lot of money for a phone advertised as free. Apple calls the Duo “the first foldable iPhone”, with a recommended retail price (RRP) starting at S$3,099 for 256GB, so you’ll see plenty of it in your feed this month. The useful question is which version of StarHub’s offer costs you the least over three years, and that one doesn’t come with a zero on the label.
How “From S$0” Works
The deal runs on StarHub’s 36-month, 0% interest Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) option. The device price is split into monthly instalments, and StarHub credits monthly DeviceDollars against eligible instalments. On the right plan, those credits cancel the instalments completely.
In practice, the phone’s cost moves into your plan. For the 256GB Duo, the totals are S$2,439, S$1,609, S$689 and S$0 respectively.
The zero also depends on storage. On Platinum Elite, the 512GB model costs S$69, the 1TB S$669 and the 2TB S$1,569. Those three are priced at S$3,399, S$3,999 and S$4,899 RRP in the table, so the cheapest Duo is the only one that reaches S$0.
Doing the 36-Month Maths
To see what you’d really pay, add the plan fees to the phone cost. Using the 256GB Duo as the example:
- Unlimited+ Plus: S$48 × 36 is S$1,728, plus S$2,439 for the phone, for S$4,167 in total (about S$115.75 a month)
- Unlimited+ Max: S$78 × 36 is S$2,808, plus S$1,609, for S$4,417
- Platinum: S$128 × 36 is S$4,608, plus S$689, for S$5,297
- Platinum Elite: S$188 × 36 is S$6,768, plus S$0, for S$6,768
The “free” phone is the most expensive route of the four, by S$2,601 over the cheapest one. Platinum Elite charges S$140 more a month than Unlimited+ Plus, which comes to S$5,040 over the contract, and saves you S$2,439 on the device in exchange.
On Platinum Elite you save S$94 × 6, which is S$564, bringing the total to S$6,204. Platinum drops by S$384 to S$4,913, and Unlimited+ Max drops by S$234 to S$4,183. Even with the discount, Unlimited+ Plus is still the cheapest at S$4,167, although Max ends up only S$16 behind.

Every “Up To” Is a Ceiling
StarHub’s table lists S$100 off on Unlimited+ Plus, S$250 on Max and S$350 on Platinum and Platinum Elite.
Some of the over S$4,000 in savings and perks requires extra steps. The S$200 trade-in bonus cashback sits on top of your old phone’s base trade-in value, so you only get it if you trade something in. The guaranteed 50% trade-in value for an iPhone upgrade in 2027 needs SmartSupport, which StarHub gives you free for one month (worth S$14.26).
The list also includes up to 50% off selected accessories, which helps if a case is on your list. If you’re thinking about a charger too, our review of Anker’s 45W retractable power bank covers one option for long commutes.
The network claim works the same way. StarHub says 5G+, powered by 700MHz spectrum, delivers up to four times faster speeds indoors and underground. That figure is a maximum, and StarHub itself says actual speeds depend on location, device, network conditions and congestion.
Traps Before You Tap Pre-Order
DeviceDollars only keep coming while you stay eligible. Deal site Miss Lobang looked at StarHub’s iPhone 18 Pro Max version of this setup and pointed out that the credits are conditional. If you leave early or move to an ineligible plan, you could be left paying the instalments yourself. The Duo uses the same DeviceDollars arrangement, so read this as a full 36-month commitment, which runs until late 2029.
You can buy one device per customer. StarHub’s FAQ says the limit covers all channels and transactions, whatever the model, colour, storage, payment method or plan. You’ll need a Hub ID, Singpass and a valid debit or credit card. Existing customers need the StarHub app and no outstanding bills. The FAQ says existing customers can buy selected devices with Unlimited+ plans.
Stock is limited, and timing matters.
The Duo is eSIM-only, meaning it uses an embedded SIM instead of a physical card. Apple lists M1, Singtel and StarHub as supported in Singapore. If you’re going on exchange or travel often, check that your overseas carriers support eSIM before you buy.
Is a Foldable Worth It on a Student Budget?
Start with the alternatives. Apple sells the same Duo at S$3,099 for 256GB, with eligible 0%-interest instalments of up to 24 months and no launch discount, and you can pair it with whichever plan you choose. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at S$1,899, which is S$1,200 less than the cheapest Duo, though it doesn’t fold. M1 is advertising its own iPhone Duo pre-order from S$0 starting at 8pm on 16 October. Before treating that as cheaper, do the same plan-fee maths on whichever M1 plan it’s tied to.
For a student or someone in their first job, Unlimited+ Plus at about S$115.75 a month is the most sensible way to get a Duo through StarHub. If that monthly figure already feels like too much, a foldable is probably more phone than you need, and the iPhone 18 Pro is the more practical choice. The S$0 Platinum Elite deal is only good value if you would have signed up for a S$188 plan anyway, whatever phone came with it.
