Meet the Captain First
If the name only rings a faint bell, here’s the setup. ONE PIECE follows Monkey D. Luffy, a young pirate captain who refuses to let anyone or anything stop him from becoming king of all pirates. He and his Straw Hat Crew sail into the dangerous waters of the Grand Line, chasing the legendary treasure that gives the series its name.
The anime comes from Toei Animation and is based on Eiichiro Oda’s manga, published by Shueisha. It has run long enough that many people in their twenties grew up with it playing in the background. Plenty of them have never watched it from the start, though, and this rollout gives them that chance.
Why Episode 1 Matters
Fans across the region have reacted with relief that they no longer have to jump into ONE PIECE mid-journey. A story this long builds on itself, with friendships, rivalries and running jokes set up hundreds of episodes before they pay off. Starting somewhere in the middle feels like walking into a wedding during the speeches. You’ll catch the gist, but the tears won’t make sense.
The dub matters more than it might seem. Reading subtitles across 746 episodes is a real commitment, and an English track makes ONE PIECE something you can put on while folding laundry or eating dinner. Purists will stick with the Japanese audio and subtitles, and that option is there too. For a newcomer, though, the dub lowers the barrier enough to stop “someday” from turning into “never”.
Two Batches, One Plan
The first batch of 325 episodes covers the crew’s early adventures, when Luffy is still gathering his crew one stubborn misfit at a time. It’s the part people reference when they talk about the series making them cry. It’s also where you’ll find out whether ONE PIECE is for you.
The second batch brings the next 421 episodes on 25 October, according to Crunchyroll. That stretch takes the crew through some of the most talked-about chapters of the saga, including Marineford and Dressrosa. Those are the arcs longtime fans tend to push newcomers towards, so they’re worth sticking around for.
There’s no reason to wait for the full set. Nobody is clearing 325 episodes in a fortnight without some serious sleep loss, so the second batch should land well before most first-timers need it. If the early arcs hook you, the rest will be waiting.
What 746 Episodes Doesn’t Cover
ONE PIECE is still running and has gone well past Episode 746. Anyone hoping to binge their way to the latest episode will hit a gap after 746.
The newest part of the story is moving fast, too. Toei Animation and Crunchyroll announced in August that the English dub of the Elbaph Arc begins on Crunchyroll in Singapore from 20 October 2026, starting with Episode 1156. New dubbed episodes are set to drop weekly every Tuesday at 9am PT (midnight going into Wednesday, Singapore time), rather than in big batches. Before that, according to the same announcement, ONE PIECE HEROINES gets its English dub from 13 October, focusing on some of the series’ best-loved female characters.
For a newcomer, that’s a lot of numbers. The simple version is this: start at Episode 1, and leave the Elbaph chatter to the people who are already caught up. You’ll get there eventually, and probably sooner than you expect.
