Genji Is Sung Jinwoo and Sombra Is a Healer in Overwatch Season 5

Overwatch Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, puts Genji in a Sung Jinwoo skin, hands the Support role a vampire, and moves Sombra out of Damage altogether. The anime skins are the part with a clock on it, because the Overwatch x Shadow Monarch collab ends on 20 October.

Blizzard’s regional schedule has the season going live on 7 October in Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), while its launch blog dates it 6 October. Every date in this piece follows that AEDT schedule, so treat each end date as a hard deadline and don’t leave anything to the last night.

5 Skins, 14 Days

The collab pairs five heroes with five characters: Genji as Sung Jinwoo, Reaper as Igris, Anran as Cha Hae-In, Reinhardt as Iron, and Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In. Blizzard describes them as dark fantasy and anime-inspired skins, and coverage of the reveal ties all five to Solo Leveling. Anyone who plans their week around Crunchyroll’s seasonal line-ups should note the collab’s dates.

Genji as Sung Jinwoo is the obvious headline act, but Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In deserves a second look. This season keeps dragging attention towards the Support role, and it helps to have a collab skin to wear while queueing for it.

Shadow Monarch is far from the game’s first anime crossover. Overwatch worked with One-Punch Man in 2023, which put Doomfist in a Saitama skin, and it has teamed up with Cowboy Bebop and announced a Gundam Wing collaboration for that series’ 30th anniversary. The practical catch this time is the window, which runs from 7 to 20 October AEDT and closes 13 days before the Halloween event does.

A Vampire Joins Support

The season is named after Doctrine, a vampire-inspired Support Hero who shares a violent past with Doomfist. According to Blizzard, Doomfist has broken him out of the Grímsvötn prison, and that jailbreak opens the final chapter of The Reign of Talon storyline.

His kit reads like a healer designed by someone who’d rather be dealing damage. The Eternal Scepter heals allies and hurts enemies from mid-to-long range, while a swarm of bat-like drones boosts his team’s healing and attack speed.

Then there’s the ultimate, which redistributes lifeforce across the battlefield by giving allies Overhealth while reducing enemy health. Topping up friends by draining the other team is the most vampire thing a healer could do, and it should make every fight over an objective feel a lot less settled!

Sombra Swaps Roles

Doctrine isn’t the only new face in the Support queue, because Sombra moves there from Damage as a “Support Tactician”. Blizzard calls it one of the biggest changes ever made to an existing hero. Her reworked abilities can heal allies or weaken enemies, and she keeps her stealth, Translocator, and EMP, though coverage of the rework says Hack no longer shuts down enemy abilities the way it used to.

Reaction has split along predictable lines. Some Sombra mains, the players who have spent years on her stealth-and-sabotage style, say the change guts what they mastered, and one Blizzard forum post asks the studio outright to reconsider. Polygon calls the redesign controversial, while Kotaku reads it as a balance fix aimed at her oppressive mix of stealth, hacking, and burst damage.

Blizzard’s Alec Dawson argues that her “soul” is intact and that the new role should “start to click” once players adjust. There’s precedent for that patience, since Doomfist went from Damage to Tank and Symmetra from Support to Damage. Anyone who mains Sombra should spend a few unranked matches relearning her before touching competitive, because teammates will now expect heals from her.

Roadhog gets a quieter rework in the same patch, with an altered Scrap Gun and a new ability called Trash Compactor.

A Prison Inside a Volcano

Grímsvötn is the season’s new map, and Blizzard bills it as the first new Escort map in years. Escort is the mode where one team walks a payload to the finish while the other tries to stall it, so a fresh route matters more here than in most modes.

The setting is a newly Talon-controlled prison built inside an Icelandic volcanic fissure, the same lock-up Doctrine was sprung from. It’s a neat touch that the story’s jailbreak and the map players fight over are the same place, which gives the lore somewhere to live beyond a trailer.

Halloween Runs Into November

This year’s Halloween event is Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, running from 7 October to 2 November AEDT. Every death brings players back with random new powers, and each week the community decides whether Ashe, Moira, or Winston rises from the grave next, until the roster grows to 20 heroes. It’s the most replayable idea in the whole update, since losing a fight becomes the fun part.

Halloween-themed Battle Pass skins arrive alongside it. The Tech Witches collection is live from 10 to 26 October AEDT, and Team Drives return for two days from 30 to 31 October AEDT.

For anyone who skipped a few seasons, Unvaulted Passes bring back revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 through 15, so missed rewards can be earned again. There are two new Mythics as well: Dragon Shaoxia Wuyang, and Treblemaker, which is Lucio’s first Mythic Weapon and, per Blizzard, has a tiny dancing frog inside it!

Season 5 asks more of returning players than a typical content drop, with a new healer to learn, an old favourite to relearn, and five anime skins that vanish on 20 October. Start with the Shadow Monarch set because it leaves first, then give Sombra a few matches before picking a side in the argument. The full patch details are in Blizzard’s Season 5 launch blog, and it’s well worth a read before the first queue of the season!
