Ask a group of friends in Singapore whether they’ve touched Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and you’ll get a show of hands, a few laughs about ranked queue, and at least one person who still has the app buried in a folder. That game, the one you queue into on the MRT, is about to be played for a national medal in Japan, in front of an Asian Games crowd, with flags and anthems attached.
The MLBB Asian Games Main Stage Group Draw was revealed on 17 September 2026, and the tournament runs 29 September to 1 October 2026 at Aichi Sky Expo in Aichi-Nagoya. Eleven teams are drawn into four groups across three days. The road stops being hypothetical now.
A Mobile Game With a National Anthem
Here’s the part that still feels strange to say out loud. The five players on that stage aren’t representing an org with a sponsor patch. They’re representing a country in a multi-sport event that also awards medals in swimming and athletics.
MOONTON Games frames it as the peak of the game’s 10th-anniversary year. Ray Ng, the company’s Head of Esports Ecosystem, called MLBB’s Asian Games run a defining moment and described the game as a stage for elite athletes rather than entertainment. Publishers say that sort of thing all the time, but this is one of the rare occasions where the calendar backs the line up.
Worth being precise about the status, because a lot of posts online are not: this is an Asian Games medal event, which is a genuinely big deal, and it is a different thing from being an Olympic sport. The International Olympic Committee announced plans for Olympic Esports Games with Saudi Arabia, then said on 30 October 2025 that the cooperation had ended. Esports keeps winning national-team structures in Asia while its Olympic route stays unresolved.
Group B Is the One to Watch
The draw put Myanmar, Uzbekistan, and Hong Kong, China in Group A. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Saudi Arabia landed in Group B. The Philippines, Jordan, and Kazakhstan went to Group C, and Cambodia and Mongolia fill Group D.
No Singapore roster appears anywhere in that draw, so pick a group to adopt. If you only have time to follow one, make it B. Indonesia and Malaysia are neighbours with a shared competitive history and a league scene that supplies rosters to half the region, so every one of those games carries baggage that has nothing to do with the bracket. Saudi Arabia sitting in that pool is the interesting variable, because Gulf esports investment has been aggressive and largely untested against Southeast Asia’s best in a national-team format.
Group C is the other one to keep an eye on. The Philippines is the country where MLBB functions closest to a national pastime, and Jordan and Kazakhstan both arrive without the regional scar tissue that makes SEA matchups so readable.
The Road That Got Here
Esports didn’t land at Aichi-Nagoya overnight. It was a demonstration event at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, then became an official medal discipline at the Hangzhou Asian Games, with seven events including League of Legends, Dota 2, Street Fighter V, and PUBG Mobile Asian Games Version.
Southeast Asia moved earlier and faster. Esports became a medal sport at the 2019 SEA Games in the Philippines and stayed on the programme for the 2021 Vietnam and 2023 Cambodia editions, with MLBB among the selected titles. Anyone who watched those broadcasts already knows what a national-team MLBB crowd sounds like, and it doesn’t sound like a club final.
The money follows the eyeballs, and MLBB’s own reach is harder to pin down than you’d expect, since MOONTON has cited more than 110 million monthly active users while third-party trackers estimate figures well below that. Either way, the number that matters is that a phone game is now a medal sport, which is a sentence that would have read as a joke in 2018.
What Comes After Japan
The Asian Games sits in the middle of a busy stretch for MLBB, not at the end of it. The game reached European audiences at EWC 2026 in Paris, and its next major stop is the M8 World Championship Finals in Istanbul, Türkiye, in 2027.
There’s also an in-game side to the moment. MOONTON is running the Asian Glory Commemoration Rewards series around the tournament, which is the publisher’s way of pulling the ranked-queue crowd into an event most of them would otherwise only see on a highlight reel. It works, mostly because the average MLBB player already understands exactly how hard the draft is at that level, and that part is the same in a Toa Payoh void deck as it is in Manila.
