XG’s Label Went Dark for a Day: Now “DEPENDS” Lands 6 November

If you’re in Singapore, set your alarm for 12am on Friday, 6 November. That’s when DEPENDS, the new single from XG, goes live here on Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. You’ll have it a good 13 hours before midnight reaches New York. Pre-saves are already open, so the track can be waiting in your library the moment the clock turns over.

Getting to that midnight took a strange turn. On 13 September 2026, the label behind XG went blank. The website and social accounts of XGALX vanished, a day after the group’s first-ever set at Rock In Japan Festival. On 14 September the label came back with a rebrand and announced DEPENDS, which drops on 6 November 2026.

New to XG? They’re a seven-member group (JURIN, CHISA, HINATA, JURIA, MAYA, COCONA, and HARVEY). They debuted in March 2022 with Tippy Toes and now use the longer name Xtraordinary Genes. Their 2026 has been full of career firsts, on the charts and on festival stages. Disappearing in the middle of that run took nerve.

Silence After a Festival High

Rewind to 12 September. XG played Rock In Japan Festival 2026 at Soga Sports Park in Chiba. It was their first time on that bill, and they had a full live band behind them. By the next morning, XGALX’s corner of the internet was empty.

When the label returned on 14 September, it announced DEPENDS along with a rebrand it called a “new chapter”. The idea didn’t come out of nowhere. In January, XGALX said THE CORE – 核, XG’s first full album, set out to strip away trends and “ornamentation” to reach the group’s essential sound.

Wiping a label’s whole online presence takes that philosophy about as far as it can go. It’s also a hard way to beat for turning festival buzz into a talking point, because a vanished feed is far harder to scroll past than one more teaser poster.

Taylor Swift Tried This in 2017

The blackout has a famous ancestor. On 18 August 2017, Taylor Swift cleared every post from her Instagram, Twitter, and other accounts. Cryptic snake videos followed from 21 to 23 August. She announced Reputation on 23 August, and its lead single landed 24 hours later.

XG’s version moved faster. Swift’s feeds sat silent for three days, while XGALX was back by 14 September. Swift returned with snakes. XG returned with a title that settles the obvious question before anyone can type it. What does the new era sound like? It depends.

A Song Built on “It Depends”

The concept is refreshingly plain. DEPENDS takes the phrase people reach for when there’s no tidy answer and builds a song around it. The song is about uncertainty, and about choices that don’t split cleanly into this or that.

If you’re between 18 and 35, you’ve probably been asked the kind of question this song is about. Relatives on their Chinese New Year visiting rounds want your five-year plan, and job interviewers want to know where you’ll be in a decade. “It depends” is the truthful reply, and it’s the one that earns you side-eye across the pineapple tarts.

A group fresh off a No. 1 album could have come back with a victory lap. Picking a song about not having it all figured out is the braver call, and it fits the blank-page reset that introduced it.

The announcement art is in on the joke. A calculator exists to give you one correct answer, and this one spells out a title that refuses to give one.

Why Reset After a No. 1?

The numbers make the gamble look even bolder. THE CORE – 核 came out on 23 January 2026. It fit 10 tracks into 29 minutes and debuted at No. 93 on the US Billboard 200, XG’s first time inside that chart’s Top 100. In Japan, the album entered Billboard JAPAN’s Hot Albums chart at No. 5, then climbed to No. 1 on the chart dated 4 February.

Lead track HYPNOTIZE hit No. 1 on Billboard JAPAN’s Global Japan Songs Excl. Japan chart, which ranks Japanese songs by how they perform outside Japan. Critics liked the album too. Everything Is Noise wrote that it “more than does its job to leave a lasting impression on newcomers”, and the Portuguese-language site PopasiaticoJPG scored it 84 out of 100.

The members kept busy between the album and the blackout. COCONA was named a Gucci brand ambassador, and JURIA landed a magazine cover as part of the Dior family.

Whatever drove the timing, XG have the momentum to ride out a day offline, and the label walks into November with a clean slate. After a year this eventful, “it depends” is the most honest answer XG could give.
