Story time—the name on the label dates back to 1840, where in that year, brothers James and John Grant built The Glen Grant as the first distillery in Rothes, in Scotland’s Speyside whisky region. He was an adventurous traveller with a serious collecting habit and in his travels, rare plants like the blue Himalayan poppy inspired a sprawling Garden of Splendours at the distillery.

Actor and media personality Paul Foster played The Major for the night and hosted a small intimate group, first going through a guided tasting of the wider lineup, from how flavours change between ages to which dishes suit each bottle. Even the bar’s atmosphere felt like The Major had chosen it himself, with every lesson that night building towards one bottle: the new 12.
Why This 12 Stands Out
The 12-Year-Old Sherry Finish isn’t totally new, but a reworked version of The Glen Grant’s signature 12-Year-Old. The team first blends whisky from different barrels, then moves it into first-fill Oloroso sherry casks for a second stretch of ageing. Oloroso is a dark, nutty style of Spanish sherry. First-fill means the cask is holding whisky for the first time since its sherry was emptied out.

Here’s the line that sells it. Stables points out that this style of finish offers “a glimpse into the rich sherry profiles you’ll find in our much older whiskies”. Those older bottles, both in flavours and price, honestly don’t come cheap. At S$99, the Sherry Finish is a sensible way in before you splash out on a bottle with a bigger number on its label. The verdict: this is the bottle for the sherry-curious. Anyone who wants extra spice and depth without losing the fruit should start here. Fans of full-blown sherry bombs will want something heavier, because this one keeps The Glen Grant’s house style firmly in charge.
