Step Behind The Curtain: Alliance Française’s Free Ballet Exhibition Reveals The Making of an Étoile

Ballet can feel like one of those art forms that looks beautifully effortless from the audience seat. The dancers glide, the costumes sparkle, the music swells and everyone pretends not to notice that a single jump probably requires more discipline than most of us have shown since our last gym trial.

But behind all that grace is work. A lot of it.

That is exactly what BALLET: The Making Of An Étoile is spotlighting at Alliance Française de Singapour, running from 29 May to 15 August 2026. This immersive exhibition takes visitors behind the curtains of the Paris Opera Ballet, offering a closer look at the training, craft and sheer commitment it takes to become an Étoile, the highest rank a dancer can achieve at the Paris Opera Ballet.

Pointe of No Return: What Makes This Exhibition Special

Follow the footprints into the not-so-glam side of glamour.

Be warned: This is not just a “look at pretty ballet pictures and go home” situation. According to Alliance Française de Singapour, this marks the first curation by the Paris Opera Ballet ever presented outside of France, which gives Singapore audiences a rare peek into one of ballet’s most prestigious institutions like never before.

The exhibition follows the full arc of a dancer’s journey from early training and rehearsals, to costume creation, choreography and the final curtain call. In other words, it is less “Wow, so elegant” and more “Wow, their calves deserve a national holiday while mine needs a stretch”.

Behind Every Swan Is A Lot Of Sweat

Costumes, craft and enough tulle to humble a wardrobe.

The exhibition unfolds in two parts.

The first, The Invisible, explores the unseen world behind every performance. Think classes, rehearsals, recovery, backstage preparation and the artisans who help bring each production to life, from costume makers to wig and makeup artists.

Then comes The Radiance, which shifts into life on stage, highlighting the spectacle of performance, the presence of the Étoiles, and beloved works such as Giselle, Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Boléro and more.

Together, both sections show that ballet is not just about the polished performance, but also about repetition, mentorship, quiet sacrifice and the slightly terrifying realisation that “standing nicely” can actually be an entire technique.

Should You Pirouette Their Way There?

Your weekend art plan, now with more plié.

Naturally, this one is for ballet lovers, dance students, arts enthusiasts and anyone who has ever watched a ballet performance and wondered how humans can move like that without immediately needing a time out.

But it’s also a solid pick for casual weekend explorers, families, culture-curious friends, or anyone looking for something thoughtful, free and different to do in Singapore. No deep ballet knowledge required, just bring the curiosity and maybe resist the urge to attempt a pirouette in public. Or don’t, it could be the start of a great career for you.

All in all, BALLET: The Making Of An Étoile looks to be more than just a graceful tribute to ballet; it’s a reminder that behind every effortless-looking performance is a whole lot of effort, discipline, repetition and probably a few very tired feet.

So plié your way down to Alliance Française de Singapour, and take a closer look at what it really takes to become an Étoile. Admission is free, so your wallet can stay perfectly en pointe.
