Hear ye, hear ye, there’s a new king in town! The drinks were flowing and the creativity even more so, as this year’s edition of The Wonderful Race by Woodford Reserve came to an exhilarating close. In a celebration of craft, flavour and flair, bartender Mel John Chavez of Bar Somma emerged as Singapore’s All-Star Champion of the 2025 competition, and with it, he’s earned a ticket to the Woodford Reserve Distillery in Kentucky, USA, to represent Singapore in the 2026 Asia Finals!

His winning cocktail, aptly named “King’s Melon”, was a standout blend that brought together Mush Melon, hojicha-infused bourbon, and a medley of botanicals. The result? A fresh, balanced twist on the classic Old Fashioned that judges couldn’t get enough of. One sip in, and you understood why the crown was his to wear all along.
A Battle of Precision, Passion & Palate

On 16 November at 25 Boon Tat, the finals saw a fierce showdown of some of the best bartenders on the island, all vying for the coveted spot. The competition featured two rounds, first, a personal take on the Old Fashioned, and next, a surprise ingredient challenge judged by a panel that included Chef Joel Tan of HighHouse.
Mel’s steady hands and sharp instincts stood out, proving that bartending isn’t just about mixing drinks, it’s true culinary theatre, performed live.
More Than Just a Cocktail Contest

Woodford Reserve’s The Wonderful Race is more than just a competition, for our mixologists, it’s a stage of opportunity. In its third edition, the event champions artistry in mixology and storytelling through flavour, all while anchoring itself with the timeless Woodford Reserve.
Amidst the clinks of glasses and camera flashes, the event reminded us why this scene deserves to thrive. In a nightlife landscape that’s still finding its footing here locally, moments like these are crucial not just for spotlighting talent, but for inspiring a culture that respects and celebrates the craft behind the cocktail.
Pour One Out for the Future

Hopefully, with more events like The Wonderful Race, the local cocktail scene continues evolving into something even bolder and braver. We’re not just here to drink — we’re here to experience. And with talents like Mel and all the other astounding mixologists leading the charge, there’s every reason to be excited for what comes next.
So if you’re a fan of mixology or just someone who enjoys a well-crafted drink, keep your eyes peeled for the next edition. Because at the heart of it all, this isn’t just about bartending, it’s about artistry, community, and a splash of something wonderful.
