Two decades ago, the worlds of luxury fashion and contemporary art collided when Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami came together to create a collaboration that marked the start of an era. Now, the House and the visionary Japanese artist are proud to present Louis Vuitton x Murakami once again, a celebratory re-edition that updates their iconic collection.
From traditional Japanese art to sci-fi and anime, Murakami’s artistic influences continue to converge in various works as generations pass. So stay tuned as I take you through what you can expect from the Louis Vuitton x Murakami pop-up right here in Singapore!
The Louis Vuitton X Murakami Pop-Up
Tucked away in a historic Peranakan shophouse in Joo Chiat, a UNESCO-recognised precinct, is the exclusive Southeast Asia activation of the Louis Vuitton x Murakami pop-up. I quite liked this location – it felt more approachable than other settings!
With its façade adorned in Takashi Murakami’s iconic 3D Superflat Garden motifs and Monogram Multicolore, the pop-up features four distinct zones – the retail space, cinema, care station, and café – and draws inspiration from Tokyo’s modular hotels. Pretty neat, huh?
Retail Space
Within the retail space is the world of Louis Vuitton x Murakami Chapter One, a jubilant reimagination of the original collaboration. The collection includes the beloved motifs, such as the Monogram Multicolore, the Superflat Panda, and the Superflat Garden, meticulously rendered across various products – from iconic City Bags to belts, bags, shoes, and more. I even spotted the Superflat Panda design on an LV skateboard – I know, I couldn’t believe my eyes myself!
And here’s something special – the Superflat Panda Card Holder, an item that’s exclusive to the Singapore pop-up. If you fancy having a true collector’s dream, you’ll want to act fast and stake your claim on this piece before it’s gone!
What’s more, every purchase of a Louis Vuitton x Murakami product at this pop-up comes with a special token to play an interactive vending machine game. Prizes include exclusive limited-edition Louis Vuitton x Murakami gifts including stickers, trading cards, or a Takashi Murakami Flower Go Walk portable game, making your visit a playful and memorable encounter with the Louis Vuitton x Murakami universe!
Care Station
Louis Vuitton’s dedication to sustainability and preserving craftsmanship remains steadfast, with care and repair services offered for Louis Vuitton x Murakami pieces – including ones from the original 20-year-old archival collections!
From replacing parts to cleaning canvas and metal – and even delicate paint touch-ups – the care station allows clients to give their treasured items a refreshed lease on life. I was so fascinated watching the artisan in action – she had such a steady hand with the brush!
Cinema
The cinema is an intimate corner where visitors can enjoy remastered versions of Takashi Murakami’s two remastered films – Superflat Monogram (2003) and Superflat First Love (2009).
These whimsical animations reimagine the classic Alice in Wonderland tale, and I couldn’t help but smile as Aya’s accidental adventure began when her phone was swallowed by the mischievous Panda – leading her on a surreal journey through the Monogram Multicolore universe. The sequel, Superflat First Love, picks up six years later, transporting Aya to Paris via a magical portal – a Louis Vuitton trunk, of course!
Café
Within the cosy café littered with Murakami flower cushions, visitors can sip on a selection of drinks ranging from coffee lattes to lemonade, served in specially designed biodegradable Louis Vuitton x Murakami cups. And as a little sweet treat – every beverage comes with a complimentary cookie!
With limited seating available, it’s worth timing your visit strategically if you’re hoping to enjoy the space. I couldn’t linger too long myself – it filled up so quickly!
It goes without saying that the Louis Vuitton X Murakami pop-up is thoughtfully designed for visitors to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of this collaboration. So, my dear reader, if you’re hoping to bring some of the Murakami magic home, make your way over pronto!
