Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective

Must-See Exhibitions to Start 2025 Right: Kim Lim: The Space Between. A Retrospective

Put your hands together for Kim Lim, an artist who defied conventions and carved her place in the male-dominated art scene of the 20th century. Inspired by her travels between Europe and Asia, Lim’s works exude minimalism, subtlety, and a touch of playful ingenuity. Spanning four decades of creative evolution, the exhibition features over 150 pieces that trace Lim’s journey of experimentation in sculptures and printmaking. Divided into four thematic sections, visitors will witness her exploration of form, texture, and space. Becoming Lim Tze Peng

Must-See Exhibitions to Start 2025 Right: Becoming Lim Tze Peng

If there’s one thing Lim Tze Peng proves, art never stands still; it evolves. Becoming Lim Tze Peng is an experience akin to turning the pages of a history book – but this one’s written with the masterful brushstrokes of Singapore’s oldest living, active artist. At 103 years old, you could call Lim Tze Peng a national treasure!

This bilingual exhibition features over 50 curated works, archival materials and two never-before-seen videos of Lim at work. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of this centenarian, whose non-linear journey spans decades of sketches, calligraphy, and paintings in ink and oil. This collection also stretches back to 1946 and leads up to a piece completed just last year!

Organised into three thematic sections, this solo show pulls you into Lim’s story, shaped by his travels and pursuit of artistic freedom. One of its highlights is the chance to admire Lim’s distinct style of calligraphy – hu tu zi (糊涂字)

But this exhibition is more than a celebration of his artistry. Lim’s work imparts an inspiring lesson – that art is less about perfection and more about persistence. And Becoming Lim Tze Peng is a testament to the legacy he’ll forever hold. So drop by; it’s bound to paint your day!

🗓️Date: Now till 23 March 2025
📍Location: Level 4 Gallery, City Hall Wing, National Gallery Singapore
💲Price: Free for Singaporeans and PRs (a General Admissions pass is required to enter the exhibition)
Opening Hours: 10am to 7pm

Teo Eng Seng: We’re Happy. Are You Happy?

Must-See Exhibitions to Start 2025 Right: Teo Eng Seng: We’re Happy. Are You Happy?

If you’ve ever thought art was just for admiring, think again. Welcome Teo Eng Seng: We’re Happy. Are You Happy? – a conversation starter in the form of an exhibition, a world of spontaneity, colours, and ironic social commentary. With nearly 70 works spanning seven decades, Teo Eng Seng – one of Singapore’s pioneering artists – invites you to see art through a whole new perspective.

One of the main sections is Don’t Try to Read it, See it, Feel it, which spotlights Teo’s innovative “paperdyesculp” creations – dyed papier-mâché transformed into sculptural masterpieces. Each piece is crafted from repurposed materials like plastic waste and second-hand curtains. Teo’s philosophy is simple yet profound – abandon overthinking, embrace the moment, and let art speak directly to your emotions.

Then there’s the Sweet Talk, Straight Talk, the second main section showcasing his sharp, often ironic takes on local and global issues. Through vibrant compositions and unconventional materials, Teo’s works delve into topics that hit close to home, sparking laughter, reflection, and maybe even a bit of discomfort.

If you’re ready to immerse yourself in bold, contemporary art or curious about what Teo Eng Seng’s £25 hitchhike to London back in the day has snowballed into, see the world through his eyes at this exhibition – and prepare for some deep reflection!

Amazônia

@janekh0_

Sebastião Salgado’s Amazônia exhibition has arrived at the National Museum of Singapore, and it’s absolutely breathtaking. Over 200 stunning black-and-white photos showcase the beauty and fragility of the Amazon, paired with an immersive audio track by Jean-Michel Jarre. This exhibition is a powerful reminder of the urgent need to protect our planet. Thank you, @zurichinsurance, for championing conservation through initiatives like the Zurich Forest project, restoring one of Earth’s greatest forests. The Amazon rainforest – the largest rainforest on the planet – is a fragile world few of us will ever have the chance to explore. Its lush greenery, teeming with mystery, is often seen only in documentaries or our fantasies.

Amazônia is your passport to experience this natural wonder; an impactful exhibition born from world-renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado’s arduous seven-year expedition. Featuring over 200 black-and-white photographs, this is a transformative journey that takes you through the Amazon’s majestic beauty, its intricate ecosystem, and the stories of the Indigenous communities.

But this poignant tribute to the “lungs of the world” goes beyond pretty pictures. Feel the spirit of the rainforest pulsing through the soundtrack by French composer Jean-Michel Jarre. Wander through two projection rooms that bring the Amazon to life. Hear the heartfelt testimonies of indigenous leaders, and connect with the exhibition through tactile image plates designed for the visually impaired.

There’s also a dedicated space for Instituto Terra, a non-governmental organisation founded by the Salgados, with a hopeful vision for environmental restoration. And maybe – hopefully – this multisensory adventure will not just have you marvelling at Mother Nature’s grandeur, but also reflecting on how we can save her from the ongoing threats of climate change and deforestation.

Having seen 1.4 million visitors worldwide in cities like London, Rome, and Zurich, it’s Singapore’s turn to be swept away by Amazônia. Doesn’t matter whether you’re a nature lover, a culture geek, or simply someone with a love for stunning photography – this exhibition is a dive into a world most of us could only ever dream of visiting.
