On 22 February 2019, Google launched its first global developer space, named Developer Space @ Google Singapore . Officiated by the Minister for Communications and Information, S Iswaran, Developer Space provides a hub for developers from around the region to network, train, host events, and grow their expertise.
Located within the heart of Google’s Asia headquarters, this 7,200ft space will provide developers access to Google’s resources – its people, programs, networks, and technologies – to help grow the developer ecosystem in the region. Supporting start-ups and developers to achieve their full potential, the space acts as a one-stop-shop where they can access the best of Google’s cutting-edge training programs – including Machine Learning (ML) Bootcamps, Cloud Study Jams and other networking events.
At the launch, Sami Kizilbash, Programme Manager (Developer Ecosystem), Southeast Asia Google shared more about the new developer hub, the upcoming programs that developers can look forward to and the hopes it has for the future. There was also a developers’ panel session organised involving local developers – featuring Sam Witteveen from Red Dragon AI, Jack Wang from Chope, Desmond Wong from The Gentlebros and Val Yap from PolicyPal.
During the panel session, these local developers shared more about their respective applications, how they have fared in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and global markets, as well as the benefits from the launch of the new developer space.
For instance, Raymond Chan, a data scientist at Chope, attended one Google’s Machine Learning (ML) bootcamps for developers and start-ups in Southeast Asia. Through the bootcamp, he gained a deeper understanding of how to use the Google Cloud Platform to better structure data from approximately 775,000 records on Chope’s real-time restaurant reservation booking platform every day. With this new knowledge, Chope has been able to use that data for more effective and timely decision-making, making it easier for customers to book restaurants.
In addition to ML bootcamps, Google will run a range of workshops on the latest Google tools and technologies, as well as programs like LeadersLab and Indie Games Accelerator that fuel ecosystem growth.
Google Developer Space will also be used to support events organized by various community groups, such as Women TechMakers and Google Developer Groups, and can be booked by Google partners and community groups to host developer-related events.
