Holey Moley: The New Kid On The Block Everyone’s Talking About

A hangout spot along River Valley Road at Clarke Quay – Holey Moley is the go-to place for drinks, great food and a game of mini-golf with friends. Holey Moley – a mini-golf and bar – is unique for its whimsical-themed golf courses that have proven to be successful in Australia and the UK.

Interview with Michael Schreiber

Prior to Holey Moley’s official launch, we got to meet the man behind the brand — Michael Schreiber, Founder and CEO of Funlab, the entertainment group behind Strike, Sky Zone, Holey Moley Golf Clubs, Archie Brothers Cirque Electric & the recently launched B.Lucky & Sons.

Michael founded Strike Entertainment – a ten-pin bowling alley – in 2001 and developed the Strike product over the years to include escape rooms, karaoke and laser tag. He also launched new concepts in active entertainment, including mini golf bars, themed games, and attraction venues.

Michael said he chose to enter the Singapore market with Holey Moley as “[it] is something completely unique, and also [an] exciting new activity globally”. Whereas for the other brands, competitors could use the same equipment such as bowling and karaoke equipment – “then how you stage the experience will be the differentiator”.
He feels that – regardless of country – people have the same needs when it comes to having a good time; something that can help them socialize with friends. “Good food, good beverage, good music [and] good environment – all those pieces are universal”.

Holey Moley serves as a great ice-breaker. In fact, Michael mentioned that Holey Moley is a popular Tinder date destination in Australia! The mini-golf bar caters to large groups as well, making it ideal for corporate team building. “Based on our experience in Australia, it’s a real ice-breaker as opposed to in a fancy restaurant, where all the executives are seated at one table and the employees are seated at another table – it’s awkward,” recalls Michael.

As for the themes used in the mini-golf courses, Michael says they were a bit random, but was based on how different holes can be created to appeal to various markets. Michael also says that they intend to change the holes every year so that visitors have something new to try out every now and then.

Moving forward, Michael says that he’d like to bring all of his brands to Singapore. “We do concepts that you can’t get on the internet, so we see a lot of potential in the Singaporean market; and there isn’t a real depth of entertainment yet on the market.”
He would like to create a space targeted “…towards the millennial market and the corporate market; with ten-pin bowling, escape rooms, karaoke rooms, laser tag [and] virtual reality – all under one roof – with DJs, great cocktails and great food.”

Mini-Golf Courses

The mini-golf space spans over two floors and features 27 holes – all of which are themed after various pop-culture references. From TV shows such as The Simpsons and Game of Thrones to films like The Wizard of Oz and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, there is something for everyone. There are even mini-golf courses themed after nostalgic games including Tetris, Pac-Man and Mouse Trap.

Holey Moley also includes three Singapore-exclusive courses; featuring popular board game Monopoly, an upside-down hawker centre and Marina Bay Sands under attack by Godzilla.

All of the courses double-up as Insta-worthy photo spots as well, so whip out your cameras and pose away!

Prices start from $20 per pax for 9 holes and all prices are subject to 10% service charge and 7% GST.

Drinks

Electric Blue ($21)

Electric Blue is a sweet alcoholic cocktail with an aesthetic appeal that is similar to the crazy milkshakes at Black Tap. Served in a glass with a vanilla rim filled with Nerds candy, Electric Blue is filled with blue curaçao, Ketel One Citron, Don Julio Blanco Tequila, Cointreau and fresh lemon juice topped with lemonade, whipped cream, a candy kebab and a sprinkle of Nerds candy. However, due to the generous amount of whipped cream and candy, the taste of alcohol itself ends up rather subtle.

Candy Man ($19)

Another must-have is the Candy Man – a twist on a classic margarita with blended jelly beans, Don Julio Blanco Tequila, Cointreau and fresh lime juice topped with fairy floss. Do not be fooled by its appearance as it is actually strong in alcohol content. Despite receiving an extra serving of fairy floss – all of which dissolved in the drink – the taste of alcohol was still prominent in the drink.

Food

The Hole In One ($25)

The Hole In One is a burger containing a beef patty, pulled beef brisket, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, Holey sauce and Texas BBQ sauce. As we got distracted with the mini-golf courses, we only tried the burger almost an hour after it was served. Hence, we were pleasantly surprised when we tasted the burger and realised that the beef patty was still juicy and not dry. Served with a side of kimchi and fries, The Hole In One is well-portioned – not leaving you too bloated or hungry for more.

Vegetarian burgers are also available – The Green ($23) comes with a Holey Moley garden patty, lettuce, tomato, Danish feta, crushed avocado, aioli and sour cream.

Prawn To Be Wild ($23)

Those looking to try something different from the norm can try out the Prawn To Be Wild pizza, topped with crispy wonton, bonito flakes, prawns, spring onions, mushrooms, sesame, mozzarella and soy sauce. While it seems like a rather uncanny combination, it is definitely tastier than it sounds. It also has a mild salty taste due to the bonito flakes and soy sauce.

All of the pizzas at Holey Moley are served in 30cm and 1m servings, so if you plan on visiting with a large group of friends, we recommend you to go for the 1m pizza – all 1m pizzas are priced at $55.

Monster Gold Burger ($99)

Feeling so hungry that you could eat a horse? Then the Monster Gold Burger is for you! Filled with a two-pound beef patty, pulled beef brisket, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, Holey sauce and Texas BBQ sauce, this huge burger can be shared between two to four people. The highlight of the Monster Gold Burger is its custom signature bun, which is spray-painted with 24 carat gold (yes, you will be eating gold)!
