A First Look at the Google Pixel 3: Google’s AI and Innovative Photography Features

Starting 1 November, the Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will be available for purchase in Singapore.

During the media launch event held today, Google announced that the latest smartphone offerings – the 5.5” Pixel 3 (64 GB) and the 6.3” Pixel 3 XL (64GB and 128GB) – will come in three colours: Just Black, Clearly White, and the new colour Not Pink, which is the only colour where Singtel will be the exclusive carrier.

Google Pixel 3: Selfies

Whether you are an amateur photographer or a selfitis, the tech giant’s third edition of its Pixel smartphone is one that is attractive for photography enthusiasts as it is positioned as one that is committed to the best photography experience.

Features such as ‘Top Shot’ allows its users to capture multiple frames from the first and last 1.5 seconds after the push of the camera button. On top of that, a recommended shot will be selected among these frames, solving the frequent half-smiles and unintentional blinks in our daily photo-taking experience.

Other notable photography features include the Pixel 3’s Night Sight mode, which allows vibrant and detailed photos to be taken in dark and low-light environments without the need for flash photography; the Playground mode makes photos, selfies, and videos come to life with animated and fun stickers through its augmented reality technology, such as Iron Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Google Pixel 3: Google Lens

Finding information or exploring is made easy with the Pixel 3’s Google Lens, which is inbuilt with the smartphone’s camera. To identify animal breeds, translate text, or find similar styles of clothing, all it takes is to point the Pixel 3’s camera and Google Lens will do the rest. Recording information or creating new contacts in your phone is also possible with the Google Lens, such as taking a photo of a flyer or business card.

Productivity is another strong suit with the Pixel 3, and it is evident with the functionality of the Google Assistant and its integration with every aspect of the smartphone, such as details about the user’s calendar, traffic to work, and reminders about the user’s important events are interwoven with the phone’s clock function.

A nifty feature to minimize distractions from social events is the “Flip to Shhh”. Simply by flipping the Pixel 3 face-down, the gesture will automatically turn on the phone’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ mode, disabling sounds and notifications.

The Pixel 3 comes with an AI-powered battery, which prioritizes its 7 hours of battery power for the users’ most important apps.

Both the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL will come with the exact same feature set, and comes with a USB-C Digital to 3.5mm headphone adapter and the Pixel USB-C earbuds in the box, allowing the user to do more without having to touch their phones, such as the user’s interaction with the Google Translate feature on the phone, and other complementary Google mobile applications.

Google Pixel 3: Google Stand

As part of Singtel’s pre-order promotion, a free Google Pixel Stand worth S$119 is also complimentary for customers who sign-up for Singtel’s DATA X 3 or DATA X 4 data add-on bundles during their pre-orders.

Singtel’s vice president for mobile marketing and sales, Ms Gan Siok Hoon, said: “We are excited to work with Google for the 2nd consecutive year to bring in the Pixel 3 phones and will be the exclusive carrier retailing this year’s hottest colour – “Not Pink”. We have also created a ‘Triple Treat’ bundle specially for our Android customers. With this, they can harness the full potential of their devices with a huge data allowance, and the freedom to access great content and unlimited data-free music on Singapore’s fastest and widest mobile network. They will also enjoy MobileSwop Unlimited which provides them with a worry-free experience.”

Although it was revealed that StarHub will unveil its pricing details “closer to launch”, StarHub has announced that its customers will be offered a Google Home worth S$189 with every purchase during its launch promotion, and that customers will also be able to get their Pixel 3 phones at $0 upfront and split the phone cost over 12 or 24 months through their StarHub monthly bill.

StarHub’s vice president of Segment & Marketing, Mr Donovan Kik said: “Building on our close partnership with Google, StarHub is the only local telco to offer customers the most comprehensive suite of Made by Google products, from Home to Wifi and now Pixel. Our customers enjoy the premium look, feel, and usability of Google hardware, and we are delighted to offer fans the latest Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Pixel users can gain an edge while streaming high-definition videos and chatting with the Google Assistant on Singapore’s fastest unlimited network as benchmarked by OpenSignal.”

The Pixel 3 starts at S$1,249 and the Pixel 3 XL starts at S$1,399. Pre-orders are available now on the Google Store.
