The Formula 1 season is around the corner yet again, but this year, fans of American rock band Good Charlotte have extra cause for celebration – the 39-year-old vocalist Joel Madden will be coming to town for the premium party, The Podium Lounge.
Touted as Singapore’s largest and most glamorous trackside after-party, The Podium Lounge will return once again for its 10th anniversary at The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. Hosted by ex-Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong and E! News Asia’s Yvette King, guests can expect three nights of exciting, glamorous entertainment.
Aside from churning out hits alongside his brother Benji with Good Charlotte, Joel Madden also was a coach on The Voice Australia and appeared on the Fox TV series Empire.
Taking time out of his packed schedule, Joel Madden speaks to us exclusively ahead of his appearance at The Podium Lounge on Saturday, September 15, where he will be performing a set as a Celebrity DJ.
Are you excited to be back in Singapore?
I’m very happy to be coming back to Singapore. I’ve always felt a good vibe, and I really love the people.
What are your favourite things about Singapore and why?
For me Singapore is such a special place in Asia – the people, the vibe and the food. It’s so easy to be happy around people, and to have a good time. The mood is always nice.
You have repeatedly expressed your admiration for Singaporean singer Gentle Bones (aka Joel Tan) on social media. Why is that so?
I really love Gentle Bones. Joel is one of the most talented songwriters I’ve come across and I believe he will be recognized by the world at large in the future in a real way. Talent and charisma can be very hard to find, so I would bet on an artist like Joel any day. He’s very special.
We’ve seen you as a musician, a judge/mentor on a reality competition and even an actor on a television series. What keeps you occupied when you’re away from the cameras?
Most of my time is spent running a music company with my brothers called MDDN. When I’m not working on that, I am working on projects of special interest to me. There are some branding things we are doing and a couple of things in tech. All of these things keep me excited, interested and busy. When I’m not working at the office, I’m at home with my family which is my favorite thing in the world.
Do you have any other projects coming up? Tease us a little!
We have a new Good Charlotte record coming on September 14 called Generation Rx, and we have a big US tour to follow that in the Fall, as well as tour at the top of 2019. We are also planning on coming back to Asia in 2019, and I may be back in Singapore for some more parties in 2019 as well.
Speaking of the Grand Prix, what is one thing that gets your adrenaline pumping?
Right now, playing Fortnite with my son is probably the most dangerous thing about me. Although, I start my wingsuit lessons next month and I really think that is going to be great for me.
What can we expect for your set at The Podium Lounge?
I am looking to have a great time and enjoy a night out with good people in Singapore. This city never disappoints!
Your long-time Singaporean fans have always been vocal about their love for you. Is there anything you’d like to say to them?
I am always really grateful every time I turn up in Singapore, everyone is so welcoming and nice, it’s very easy to have a great time. People are so laid back here. I appreciate everyone in Singapore who have always been so nice, and I always look forward to coming back, especially when I’m flying Singapore Airlines.
