A Taste of Love and Morality: Bound Theatre Returns with ‘The Taste of Water’

What happens when two people find each other again after years apart, only to be torn by the impossibility of being together?

The gripping premise sets the stage for local theatre collective Bound Theatre’s sixth original production, The Taste of Water. Founded in 2011, Bound Theatre aims to explore the contradictory tensions of the human condition through their works, and The Taste of Water will be the company’s first step in fleshing out the inner states of characters.

The Taste of Water: Embrace

Written by Teng Zi Ying, the play follows two long-time friends who fell for each other after being years apart. In this perfect-seeming picture, the duo finds themselves in a dilemma where they are supposed to be in love with other people. Traversing through time and space, would they make the ‘right’ choice between love and morality?

The physical theatre piece would feature a cast of nine youths aged 20 to 27, which consists of both Bound Theatre’s core team members and new faces, namely James Chia, Juliana Kassim Chan, Wendi Wee Hian, Audrey Teong, Erika Maguicay, Hu Yu Heng, Tan Hui Er, Seet Yan Shan, and Wee Jia Yi.

The Taste of Water: Rehearsal Scene

Besides the original script, the show would also feature original audio tracks created by Lim Wen Liang, who is currently an undergraduate at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music at NUS.

“This show is a child birthed from long debates and incredible devising, and I’m really excited for the audience to join us in this tussle,” scriptwriter Teng Zi Ying said, adding that the play was created through a combined effort between the cast, director, and herself.

Be sure to catch Bound Theatre’s third physical theatre piece, The Taste of Water, as the actors play different roles through time and states of mind to explore the concepts of morality and love.
