RIP #InstagramTree: Our Tree-bute To The Punggol Landmark

The Housing and Development Board announced yesterday (December 9) that the popular “Instagram Tree” located at Punggol Waterway Park will be removed on December 16, referred to here as The Day The Tree Leaves.

The barren tree is/was a well-known attraction online, with its uniquely desolate surroundings (sunset beyond its knoll, no other trees nearby) painting a rather bleak and intriguing picture. Perfect for the semi-pretentious public introspection that is Instagram.

In a short post on Facebook, HDB said that the tree has been certified dead by arborists (tree nerds). Citing falling branches and distraction from the artificial park as a safety hazard, park visitors have been advised to stay away because we can’t have fun unless it’s taxable and comes with a permit.
