The Housing and Development Board announced yesterday (December 9) that the popular “Instagram Tree” located at Punggol Waterway Park will be removed on December 16, referred to here as The Day The Tree Leaves.
The barren tree is/was a well-known attraction online, with its uniquely desolate surroundings (sunset beyond its knoll, no other trees nearby) painting a rather bleak and intriguing picture. Perfect for the semi-pretentious public introspection that is Instagram.
In a short post on Facebook, HDB said that the tree has been certified dead by arborists (tree nerds). Citing falling branches
and distraction from the artificial park as a safety hazard, park visitors have been advised to stay away because we can’t have fun unless it’s taxable and comes with a permit.

Out of respect for The Tree’s last days here on Singapore’s moist, flood-prone soil, here are some great shots that Singaporeans have taken with It. Enjoy.
Some people call it the Instagram tree, others call it the lonely tree at punggol, either way I think of it as a good memory for those loves strolling around the park and trying to get away from the stress of work and etc. Its sad to know that they plan to cut it down on the 16 dec as its considered hazardous for public to be around it as the tree is very old. Singapore Instagrammers and pro photographers will miss you and the only thing they have left from you its a photo taken of you. #exploresingapore #instasg #instagram #vsco #vscocam #instagramtree #punggolwaterway #thelonelytree A photo posted by @danialkamal91 on

How does one truly complete you? • I’ve always wanted to shoot couples in action (not the cliché kind of couple shoots) and was quite fortunate to come across this two who were having fun at the famous #instagramtree ! They had like millions of poses and I managed to snap one, before appearing like a complete creep/stalker ??! A photo posted by Dharf (@dharfvader) on
