GAYA 2019 Sangharsa (‘The Struggle’): An Adventure Through Indonesia’s Forgotten Histories

Singapore Management University’s Komunitas Indonesia (SMUKI) is back with their annual musical production, GAYA 2019 – short for Gelar Budaya. Titled Sangharsa: The Struggle, this year’s play is set in the 15th century.

The ruler of Mataram, Senapati (I-En), looks to strengthen his iron grip over Nusantara by sweeping over every (villages) in the land – except for this village named Perdikan . Led by two young brothers – Wanabaya () and Baru Klinting (Mason) – they challenge Senapati’s conquest by defiantly protecting their village.

In their attempt to do so, they face many challenges; which include confronting the wrath of a mighty empire and understanding what it means to love someone truly. The plot revolves around an enthralling tale rife with adversity, love, and betrayal.

Established in 2007, GAYA produces shows by both students and alumni members who are passionate about sharing their knowledge of Indonesia’s culture. As one of the largest arts and cultural productions in SMU, GAYA attempts to bring forth Indonesia’s rich heritage by infusing traditional songs and dance in a captivating manner.

Their past productions have been lauded with rave reviews and have successfully brought a greater appreciation of the Indonesian culture to the local community.
